One of the first things it does would be to retrieve the list of the satellites in sight to the terminal, if I'm correct: I have no idea how long it takes

People love to throw all their physics and GPS plots around to explain something of this world, which possibly isn't from this world.

We share what we can, and what we can share is DATA: at least we try to ADD something to the discussion. And anyway, as already pointed out, GPS data doesn't seem to be 100% reliable, according to gps, this would be what happened:

I think it would be hard to do in practical terms.

If one knew the height of the light and the height of the tree and the distance between them and the camera it might be possible to get a rough idea of the elevation of the camera. But small errors could skew the result by too great an amount to make it useful.

Maybe a test at the location would work. Sit on the ground and take a shot of the light with the tree behind it. Sit in the car seat. Sit on the bonnet. Take a shot standing. Then compare those images to Fiona's and look for the closest match for the angle. I don't know if it's worth the effort though.

thanks again mnn, so it looks like it only works when called upon by an application or a dialled number. so maybe i was correct in thinking the gps data was none existant in photo 1 and slightly corrupt in photo 2 because the phone was still finding its bearings after the camera application was switched on and asked for gps.
thanks

Firstly, I'm very glad some folks have questioned the use of the iphone's gps data. I use a 'real' gps, and the altitude reading is *always* an approximation, and is only vaguely accurate if you have a LOT of satellites to triangulate from. But the same also applies, if to a slightly lesser extent, to the location data. Quite apart from the fact that it may have been using cell-tower approximations, the accuracy of the 'fix' is again extremely dependent on the number and strength of satellite signals.
It's also worth noting that the 'assisted' gps system that the iphone uses, does NOT give substantially better precision than normal gps, and it only applies if the phone is getting both satellite and cell-tower triangulation data. (Now if you were talking about *differential* gps, it would be a different story, but the iphone most certainly doesn't have that.)

I'm sorry, but to me, that GPS data is essentially worthless, especially given the exact same readings on 3 images, where one might assume the phone had simply lost the signal.

We can SEE where the images were taken from, and there is simply no way whatsoever that you could use altitude data to see if the photographer was sitting or standing.

For further information on how misleading claims like "10 meter accuracy" are:
www.romdas.com...
I'd suggest that if we did a genuine analysis of how much error range is likely to exist, you'd be talking many tens of metres in total. I'm *not* volunteering to do that analysis.

Onto the reflection thingy..

No. I see it too. We're just trying to determine if this reflection (car? vent? neck rest?) is possible to capture, outside Fiona's car.
This is the crux of discrepancy!

Many dispute it. Few wanna hang on to belief!
I am among the few rooting for the underdog = integrity!

While it sorta looks like a car or van, the angles just don't add up, unless it is something other than a windscreen doing the reflecting. If you are looking roughly horizontally through a windscreen, you do NOT see cars.. just the dashboard and other stuff that is ~45 degrees down.

I would strongly suggest that you take a look at the quite striking and unusual interior designs of the PT Cruiser, eg:
l.yimg.com...
It could be the silvery areas around the circular vent thingy, or simply something on the dashboard. But there have been several different iterations of that dashboard, so without knowing which one it's just wild guesses..

thanks phage. im sorry to all if im a bit sketchy at the moment and seem like a pest, i only came across this thread late last night and have been reading right through the night to catch up.

hopefully ill be able to contribute more in future now ive signed up, ive been a reader for a couple of years but never bothered to join because usually there's a few too many nutjobs in some of the threads.

this thread has been excellent and it convinced me that there's plenty of sane logical people on here worth talking to.

im extremely impressed with most of the contribution in this thread so far and ive already learned a lot.
thanks

TwoPhish

I have been extremely careful not to state anything “against” the witness. I have not stated she is a liar or a hoaxer. I have done my best to remain objective & non-emotional.

Your response to that was to insult me & make accusations against me.

I have been happy enough to ignore you since you started that behaviour.

However, you have now taken a step too far.

You said this to the witness:

Although my posts come off rather aggressive and hurtful, I (and probably the only one at this juncture) am on your side.

You have misrepresented my position & that of everybody else who is trying to analyse this case.

By saying that, you have suggested we are all “against” the witness & you have tried to elevate yourself above all of us.

That is a hypocritical joke, considering the extremely poor quality of your contributions in this thread & your own strong abuse of the witness early in this thread.

Sincerely
Maybe...maybe not

[edit on 27-3-2010 by Maybe...maybe not]

Ahhhh Wha..............t?
My poor quality of contribution?

Listen Maybe MaybeNot,
I reside in USA. I have an extreme interest in this story, I apologize that I am not there to measure the triangulations like you have (whatever that all means) But you know what? My replies are sincere. Youra are more scripted!
(now you pissed me off)

I appreciate your work however.......I can NOT deduce what your GPS triangulations into my ordinary 'know-how' brain. This entire thread has been reduce to science!!!!!

This was a UFO "did she see one" thread!!!!

You stated further back, Fiona's story wasn't adding up (in so many words)
To me that suggests, she was fabricating this!

I don't know about you Aussie, but us New Yorkers call it like it is!
You skirt around whatever you're trying to say but, at the end of the day, what you're saying is: this is NOT adding up!

I have always been on her side (for I lack the technical knowledge to debate otherwise and Ive asked her straight out questions, to the best of my scientific ability..... to try to understand the discrepancy put forth. And she, in her own way, has obliged.

So I am not sure what your beef is with me except, I don't embrace your computer-like answers.

Other than that, I have no other issues with you.

I gave you accolades on your work early on however, I've asked you repeatedly to break it down so my mind can take it in.

You seem evasive in your findings and more......technical.
I don't KNOW the GPS and its findings reduces to but you sure like to keep talking about them!

I've been on Fiona side from the get-go yet all along, questioning her so I can have a full understanding due to the scrutiny this event has been brought under.

So...........don't attack me. If your conscious is guilty, empty it on someone else.
I was merely stating (what I believe to be ) a fact.

It looks like, in retrospect, you were lying in wait , looking to attack me.
Okay, you had your meal. Now..........please spit me out cause I am done with you!

What you're all are (pretty much) saying is:
There is no way what Fiona states (to be factua) is true.

Stop beating around the proverbial bush.

Someone can NOT mix up (in the heat of the moment) whether she was inside or outside her car!
That's what many of you are saying. So SAY IT!

Don't placate the situation!!! Either her statements are authentic or they're not. It's that simple.

If she was inside her car (which many of you are eluding to) then.............she went home, saw her "Sun-setting" photos and saw an opportunity to make up a story!

Again, just say it!
You can't have it both ways.

There's NO way someone can be innocent yet confused (in this particular situation) and still be deemed, authentic.

I again, say...............Fiona saw what she saw and WE'RE (well, you are) tearing it apart hoping to debunk her claim!

Am I the only one seeing this the way it is (from my prospective anyway)?

You techno dudes, love to talk 'shop'. And all the while, you're not SAYING what you feel.

So...............say it!!!! Is she lying? Or is she telling the truth? There is absolutely NO middle ground!!!!!

hi chrlz, thanks for that post, i only had a basic understanding of gps thats why i asked a few questions. i now have a far better understanding after the excellent posts of many people in this thread including yourself and from reading the info that MMN very kindly pointed me to.

on the subject of the reflection, is this a possibility that its a kind of double reflection from the right side window and onto the windscreen? and we are seeing the side and/or back of a car just passing?. im sure ive seen that sort of reflection happen in my own cars in the past.

thanks

ok, thanks fiona, i just had to read up a lot of info because i didn't know. but i couldn't find a definitive answer. ive just read elsewhere that it only actually asks for the co ordinate information when an either an emergency number is called or when using a gps required application such as sat nav or photos or if turned on manually. maybe yours has been turned on and left on? i dont have an iphone so dont know, i have a nokia n95 and it only uses it when called on. maybe you should check your settings as it will drain battery power.

thanks

I think you have misunderstood why Maybe...maybe not is being, as you put it evasive.

Without sounding disrespectful towards Maybe...maybe not, his impartiality in this case has been compromised.

Which to me is understandable since he has met with the witness and created a bond (for want of a better word) and does not want to offend.

Hope I'm on the right track here and please correct me if I'm wrong maybe...maybe not.

I think you're better off that way!

Many UFO claims, even classic one like Barney and Betty Hill (who, I had the pleasure to talk to and she was a lovely lady) still have their debunkers. Almost 50 years later!!!!

This is a tough topic Fiona. A very harsh reality for most to embrace. And a very easy one to make up tales about too! So because of that, most want and demand 'proof' and yet so many attack it when it's brought forth.

Maybe many react out of fear? Maybe out of distrust? Maybe out of misunderstanding and acceptance. Maybe out of pure ignorance. Who knows.

I don't know you so I can not project what your ulterior motives might've been, so because I lack that knowledge I, deem you to be real.

And you know what? The more quiet you/we become, the more acceptance it will bring. Funny how that works!

So again, I think you're on the right track.
Keep this to your self for now. You don't need this much negative attention because after all, the paranormal always attracts that kinda crowd and you know, your truth!!!

Be brave. Be truthful. And just believe!

Namaste~

i sort of agree, maybe...maybe not has still offered his thoughts of what he thinks is the truth but is obviously not going to try to offend someone that was kind enough to help him so much. and so far i can only applaud him and fiona as well. mmn has done a great job so far and has made a great contribution as well as being very helpful to a newbie like me.

fiona has also been very kind in going out of her way to help and has also taken this all very well in spite of the direction this thread has taken.

thanks

I realized that Chad. But that doesn't exonerate him for attacking me.
Throughout his 'findings' he was implying that Fiona took these photos from inside her car. I was simply putting words behind his implications.

And so.....I stated (in an open-post to Fiona) that I am pretty much the only one who believes in you.
At which time MMN, ambushed me insinuating, he did too (all the while showing how her story wasn't jiving)

I'll stop here because the Mods will probably delete this because it's off topic but I was attracted to this thread from the get-go.
I embraced it with total trust towards Fiona (although, I might've said some not-so-nice things about her).
And I got caught up (more sucked up) in the debunking stages of this story.

I am just after the truth. Be it Fionas or Peter Piper's truth.
I know we're being visited and I love to see videos and/or photos. I find it fascinating.
Fiona's story just got to me.

So with that (seeing this will be Mod-erased probably) I bid you farewell for now and maybe I'll see you on another thread!

hi fiona, maybe you misunderstand a little bit, but even if that was an alien spaceship or a secret military aircraft nobody would be able to solve it because we can't capture the alien ship and make them admit it and the military would never admit to a secret aircraft unless they want to.

im also not sure what specialists your hoping to find on here. im guessing a lot of people on here may be just normal everyday people with an interest in the subject, although for all i know there could be a few scientists but still its an almost impossible subject to prove either way.

all these people have not just set out to try and call you a liar, im quite sure that everbody on here would love to see alien visits to earth proved beyond all doubt,

im sure everbody on here is just applying their different fields of knowledge to either rule out or rule in any natural explanation before making a leap.

you also have to understand that these claims have been getting made for absolutely years with a huge percentage ending up proven hoaxes and frauds even when the claimant comes across as honest and is absolutely adamant that its true.

you asked earlier why would someone make it up and go public about it, well i have no answer as to why, but hundreds if not thousands of people do it every year.

also lots of people can make mistakes on what they think they saw and happened to what actually happened, and lots of people do that with complete innocence and with good intentions.

hope your not offended by any of what ive just written, im just trying to answer your question.

thanks
