Israel: Man Killed Following Rocket Attack
12:29pm UK, Thursday March 18, 2010
Lulu Sinclair, Sky News Online
A man has been killed in Israel in a rocket attack fired by Palestinian militants from the Gaza Strip.

The dead man was a farm worker from Thailand who was working on the Netiv Ha'assera kibbutz, near the border, an Israeli emergency services official said.
It is the first such death in Israel since the country's offensive against Gaza in January of last year.

Sky News Middle East correspondent Dominc Waghorn said: "The mortar hit near a greenhouse and it killed the man outright.
"It is one of five missiles that have been sent out of Gaza since last night.

"It seems likely that Israel will retaliate because it takes injuries or deaths very seriously."
A previously unknown group in the Gaza Strip calling itself Ansar al-Sunna (Followers of the Sunnis) says it carried out the attack.
Its name is one which is also used by al Qaeda allies in Iraq and elsewhere, indicating that the group belongs to a hardline group challenging the ruling Hamas.
"You have to talk about this claim cautiously," said Dominic Waghorn, "as many groups who claim to have carried out attacks are not the ones who actually did.

"But what we know about this group is that it is one of the fringe groups affiliated to or inispired by al Qaeda.
"That would be bad for Hamas because it means people are increasingly growing disenchanted with Hamas, believing it is not Islamist enough."
Hamas has been trying to enforce an informal ceasefire between Israel and the territory.

Thursday's attack came on the same day as a visit to Gaza by Europe's top diplomat, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, the first such visit in more than a year.
Lady Ashton had just crossed into Gaza when the attack took place.

5 Rocket attacks in the last few hours and an Israeli retaliation almost certain.

This touches on my fears that there are to many tense sphincter muscles with itchy trigger fingers in the area, it'll only take one or 2 little mistakes for this to escalate out of control..

I will keep hoping this will not escalate further...

So, let me get this straight... Some Palestinian militant killed a non-Israeli immigrant with one of their toy rockets - the FIRST such death in over a year - and the Israelis are going to "Retaliate"? Did I get that right? Cuz the way I see it is that the Israelis have mercilessly slaughtered hundreds, perhaps thousands, if not even more, innocent Palestinaians in the last year. Thus, the way I see it is that this is the PALESTINIANS retaliating against the Godless state of Israel for their continued acts of terror perpetrated against innocent Palestinians.

It appears that ANY act of self-defense or retaliation on the part of the oppressed and oft terrorized prisoners known as the Palestinians will be met with a mind-numbing show of force by the Israelis with a feeble justification. It is a shame that the Palestinains cannot "Retaliate" with a similar show of force.

Its ok, only an Israeli got killed... He was no doubt doing evil things in his green house... However when we retaliate there will be thread after thread of the evil Israelis killing "innocent" Palestinians...

They bring it on themselves.. They must love being shot at or something, or provoke Israel into attacking so those poor oppressed attention seekers can scream over bodies on TV....

Zero sympathy for them anymore

This is a crossing of the red line, which Israel cannot accept. The Israeli response will be appropriate. It will be strong," Vice Prime Minister Silvan Shalom told reporters.

Poor guy. How would you feel getting wtfpwnt in your own greenhouse?

I've got to say this is rather disturbing. These guys are clearly in range of rocket attacks now. It's a more substantial threat than it was before when they basically couldn't hit anything. All this sabre rattling is going to get people killed.

However when we retaliate there will be thread after thread of the evil Israelis killing "innocent" Palestinians...

I feel sorry for the guy. But what happened to the buffer zone? Is he living in it and now they just have to extend it further? Maybe trash Gaza again? He probably shouldn't have been there. Doesn't change the fact he sounds like a civilian non combatant.

Killing civilians is just plain wrong. Perhaps both sides should stop using them as human shields?

so we are going to act like Netanyhu is not happy this happened?
hell he may even have orchestrated it.

it wouldn't be the first time Israel faked an attack on themselves
remember those oxygen tanks in the farmer's backyard?

Maybe if holocaust victims sent rockets or threw rocks at the Nazis we should hate them too eh!

Blowback can be a b#$%

I also dont have any sympathy anymore for these Palestine terrorists, at least the IRA did most of their assaults on army bases, like real men..But willingly killing civilians is just plain terror, just as using them as shields...I hope they hit 'em back...hard..

The dead man was Thai, not Israeli.

www.jpost.com...

“It is severe escalation,” said Shalom. “Israel will not return to the situation of before Operation Cast Lead. The response will be particulate fierce...I hope Hamas will learn a lesson.”

Great,more death to follow.
Just what the middle east needs...not.

No disagreement. They know what will stir the Israelis to launch military strikes...to which they have no defense and have no chance of a real victory...yet they do it anyway. I can only surmise that it is all about media attention. Under those circumstances, my own sympathy watching this from afar wears thin as well. All acts such as this serve to do is further enrage the Israeli government and its people that ultimately leads to a worsening of the Palestinians' position.

There comes a time when, if you want peace, you have to actually practice peace and stop fighting. Contrary to popular belief, that principle doesn't only apply to the Israelis.

I can agree there. I am very against Zionist repression of the Palestinians. But at the same time I'm also against randomly firing off rockets into civilian areas.

That is definitely terrorism in my books. There is a big difference between peaceful protest and murder of innocent bystanders.

The dead man was Thai, not Israeli.

Does it matter which race he was or where he was from? This will probably start another round of killing and spill into a larger regional conflict. Many people could die.

Is it too much to ask for the people in the Middle East to stop all this warmongering and act like civilised people?

Is it really going to take the international community sending troops in there to solve this?

Perhaps this retaliation has something to do with Israel being hellbent on creating more illegal settlements. If not, I'm sure they will use it as a reason to create more illegal settlements.

I care about Palestinian children too whose parents put them in that position and use them and their schools as weapons carriers, use the schools as firing platforms and turn their own kids into targets... Unfortunately those kids will grow up to be bombers too and if peace doesnt come then Israel will also have to deal with them....

They deserve everything they get, and now it seems they will get what they asked for.... No sympathy

ummmm
How would you hear him apologize?
There's snipers all along the gaza wall
they are like sardines in a can with guns always pointed at them

if you would hear him apologize by what means would he do so?

And where are the two million apologies needed from the state of Israel?

No but forget it, let's keep being an oppressor's apologist and defend the state using white phosphorus on innocent civlians.

Well whats next? A new buffer zone? Then more terrorist attacks on settlers in response. Requiring a new buffer zone further out? When does the madness end?

Firing rockets and shells at eachother across non existent and totally non defined boarders is really no way to live.

That is what freedom for your existence is all about. That is exactly what all the European nations were doing while under the German occupation. It holds a high price.

Remember freedom is not free, its fought for with blood and acts of bravery.
