Gold. The very word inspires visions of wealth, power and beauty.

Personally, I don't own any Gold. My wife has Gold in her ring.

She likes it. I don't have a ring. I don't like jewelry, as I think it is vain. But my wife (we are common law) insisted on a ring.

She likes to show it off. It is a nice ring. But...

What drives the value of Gold?

About 78% of the gold consumed each year is used in the manufacture of jewelry.

geology.com...

That leaves 22% that is not valued for purely vain reasons

Sure, Gold is highly conductive, and is used in electronics. But so is Silver. Actually, Silver conducts better than Gold. But it doesn't sound as good saying, "the output jacks of my new stereo are Silver plated", does it.

So, I think it's fair to say that, Gold value is driven by GREED.

Gold backed currency, is valued by the amount of GREED in the society that uses it.

Gold values are higher than ever. And they are predicted to rise.

Ezekiel 7:
19They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed: their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.

I choose God, over Gold.

gold is valuable because society, has made it valuable, i guarantee that, if we started saying copper was as valuable as gold, people would go nuts, its all in the media, per say

You choose god over gold eh ? Hmmmmm....100 oz of gold or 100 oz of god...Let me think...Which would I prefer to have ?

Wellll...Given gold is around $1120 USD an oz at the moment and god is around $0 per oz, I choose gold thanks...Bit of a no brainer really...

Meh... I could care less about gold. I have my wedding band and that is all of the gold I own. I do not plan on acquiring any gold either, despite the loud cries to "Get into gold NOW!"

I look at it like this... gold only has value because there are people who desire it. It is the old econ101 supply and demand issue. The more people want of something, the more "Value" it has. Let's assume that the whole conomy goes into the tank. There are many people who will defend gold as the universal currency. However, I completely disagree. I won't trade or barter ANY of my supplies for gold. Why? I can't eat gold, can't wear gold to protect me from the elements, can't shelter in gold, can't defend myself with gold. Heck, the only thing I can do with gold is find some sucker who has the supplies I need and is willing to trade his very valuable commodities for some useless metal. That's just my .02 though...

Gold is a pretty rock. Its value to me is exactly the current value the markets give it, be it a buck per ounce, or a million bucks per ounce.

As far as jewelry is concerned, I prefer silver myself.

The only thing golden I own is a keyring thing I picked up in Egypt...and its only gold plated.

The quest for shiny rocks has seemed silly to me and I really dont understand how gold became so valueable than other materials...only as of late have we even found a use for it beyond jewelry.

I was reading revelations last night (for a thread I am putting together maybe by this weekend), and it seems the council of spirits, 60 guys I guess, all wear crowns of gold...so, I imagine that it has religious significance. Not sure if the 7 forms of God wears any gold

Outside of certain electrical applications it doesnt have any real value. Only the fake value determined by "want."

Uses of gold

Nearly all of them are petty ornamentation. Funny to think of how many people have died so somebody can play dress up.

Manipulation by those of it that have more than you or I do.
It's pretty simple really.

Something considered precious, therefor controlled and manipulated since the first intelligent being picked up a shiny gold pebble and traded it for a weapon.
(Which is probably just what happened sad to say)...

peace

It takes alot to turn oxygen into gold which I believe is the only way it can be made. Thats probably why the value is so incredibly high because it isn't something we can easily re-create. Alot like how diamonds are worth so much because to make a true diamond it takes a tremendous amount of time, a miracle of nature just like gold.

Dude...if you had 100 oz of God..a measurable, quantifiable and proven contained diety...that would be worth...not sure, billions? trillions? guess it depends on if you can make it do stuff, like create universes or something.

you seen how much the ghost in a bottle went for on ebay...imagine a god in a bottle...

the funniest bit is the only reason all the traders are shouting "get into gold now" is because the prices are at a very high point, and in any business, value rises, then falls!...

traders are wanting everyone to buy their cold now while the prices are sky high so they can make a healthy profit and buy it back when the price drops.

When people say BUY GOLD, they more or less are talking about commodities in general. Gold happens to be a standardized commodity ever since antiquity. But you can really use anything as a commodity: silver, oil, water, bread, your children. Anything that has value (the amount of need or want of a client to purchase your commodity). Ever since we've been off the gold standard, it seems like gold prices have sky rocketed. But that's a farce. The need/want for gold is roughly the same as it has ever been, the only thing changing is our currency (worth less and less). Commodities really don't change to harshly (except maybe oil, but that's because of monopolies), and gold is no different. Value is all in the client. Someone from the desert will value water more than gold, etc.

The only gold I ever possessed was a class ring but the airport baggers robbed me blind and my silver chain as well. These days I have no jewlery at all. Another ironic thing is the the chain that I had was a Jesus piece but got stolen. Maybe that is why I don't believe anymore but then again I lost faith on both gold and god a long time ago.

Copper is much more plentiful then gold, for that reason gold is so expensive because there isn't enough to make the water pipes in every house in america out of it. Gold is extremely valuable because it is; not only rare but also a vibrant beautiful metal.

Oh, I dont know...making a statement like that means there is evidence to back that claim up to begin with.

I dont dismiss the concept of a exceptionally powerful being that could have the ability to create things, be it people, or even a universe from simple backround radiation...

Imagine what human beings will evolve into within say...20 billion years with the rate of progress we have now...would we not all be godlike in our abilities?...hell, even a million years or less we may be as powerful if the law of accelerated return continues on.

Not to say we would be Gods, but what is the difference if you could simply think things into existance or non existance.

GOLD HAS NO VALUE

Its good to see this thread as this has been my exact thought again any commodity. A commodity is only worth what the highest bidder is willing to pay. Yes gold does have some practical uses in industrial applications but not so much to make it as valuable as it has become on use alone. Therefore the true and intrinsic value is only because the metal is perceived as scarce. This perception drives price up or down depending on how many like minded people perceive what the price should be. Now think about it like this. Say if a war breaks out and we go back to primitive times. Now you have 5 ounces of gold and I have the last tomato seed. Now what is more valuable? Obviously if everyone is starving the seed would be important. All the gold in the world wouldnt be worth that seed. Value almost always comes down to security. When you make someone feel familiar and safe you can sell them anything.

So which is it?! My, but you're full of contradictory information, fellow!

Value: estimated or assigned worth.
dictionary.reference.com...

Gold has no value? According to that logic, then neither does your life, or diamonds, or the world's supply of food.

Worth, of course, is subject to interpretation. It is relative to those who are purchasing, as well as those who are selling. Please think before you post.
