Hate Speech Infiltrates Social-Networking Sites, Report Says

www.cnn.com

The unregulated nature of the Web has aided a proliferation of cyber-hate, according to a report the Simon Wiesenthal Center for Tolerance released Monday.

The report, Digital Terrorism and Hate 2010, notes that there are about 11,500 hate-affiliated Web pages, a 20 percent jump from last year's study.

According to the Wiesenthal Center, personal blogs as well as mainstream social-networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace, YouTube and Twitter are easily flooded with racist ...

Well, for all the good the Internet is, there's bound to be bad and in an environment where anonymity is so pervasive, it's not surprising that hate appears to rise to the top. But I have to rely on the idea that for every bad guy there's a million more decent people ... just like in the real world.

Though the Internet can provide exposure to topics people wished were harder to find like hate and the advocacy of violence, it can also provide outlets for people to come together, educate themselves, etc. It's just a tool.

Depending on who you ask there could be a lot more hate sites than that. Anyway I don't need other peoples opinions filtered. I can deal with reading what anyone has to say about anything. Sometimes it makes me angry to read other peoples opinions but if you don't feel like reading anything you completely disagree with you can self censor by knowing what to expect from the average poster on different sites.

Wow...I hope this report didn't cost them much-If they had phoned me up I could have told them the same thing-That trolls exist on the internet!

Well, everybody report and get ready for the 2 minute hate! Peace is War!

What was the point of this report?

Hmm, maybe to try to belittle the freedom of speech we currently enjoy on the internet, using the tried and tested medium of fear of terrorism. If they do this for long enough, they will quite easily brainwash the sheeple into publicly calling for internet filtration and censorship, yet again, whittling down our rights, whilst making the hoarding masses believe that they are doing us a favour and keeping us safe from those terrible and evil tewowists.

You'd think that people would start to see the pattern by now, but I'm sure that they'll just blindly go about their business safe in the knowledge that Big Brother is keeping them safe

Given the organisation that released the report, this sounds like a thinly veiled attempt to try and stop online criticism of Israel by having it labeled as anti-Semitic, which is typical and par for the course...

And by the tone of the report, it seems said organisation might be dropping some not so subtle hints it would like to see the way people communicate on the internet regulated in some way

I hate surveys about hate filled websites and blogs.

An oppinion is an oppinion. You may not agree with them but they have every right to use the internet as anyone else. You just have to trust that the majority of people, wont get sucked in.

Id rather people did this stuff on the web, rather than spraying it across walls or handing it out on leaflets.

Well what do they expect, they control us to the extent we cant even voice our opinion on the streets, or tell our children to "behave" without some "PC Correct" MP or have-a-go hero on the street getting involved.

People are fed up, there angry, there p.ssed off, and its no wonder its surfacing on the net where we still have relative free-speech. Although even this is now dwindling to the point where unless were "socially accepted", the PC Brigade is back in force again.

I agree, obviously if there doing surveys on this now. They're already planning on how to control what we say on the internet.

Yes, I've noticed it too. Everything I read/hear lately is about "Muslim radicals" and "Muslim extremists" and "Islamic Jihadists." The number of hate-affiliated Web pages promoting racist al-Qaeda conspiracy theories has jumped dramatically. I mean, it's not like talking about Jewish radicals and Jewish extremists and Christian Crusaders, because that's completely different and not hateful at all.

The amount of hate on the internet is distressing. I can't think of anything that can be done, however, that wouldn't be worse than what we have already.

Freedom is the nature and the great advantage of the internet. So, perhaps unfortunately, is total subjectivity.

If you don't like what you're reading, don't read it. In many cases it's just one person's opinion.

The Chinese censor their internet, although from what I understand not entirely successfully. Enterprising people still find a way around it.

Welcome to the brave new world.

Leave it to CNN to dig around for yet another race story.

Hate speech is a protected right guaranteed under the First Amendment. While some courts will rule (granted, the ultra progessivist only) that Hate Speech is NOT protected, the Supreme Court has upheld that it is. Just because you don't like the idea, does not give you the right to subject your views onto others.

The Internet is going to have a lot of hate speech because it's anonymous .. no one takes responsibility for their words.. it's one thing to walk around down town calling people racially derogatory terms, than to do so from your own home sitting in a chair and no one knowing you.

What's my personal opinion?

Whoopty f#% doo! Who gives a crap? Honestly.. if you troll around the internet specifically looking for racial slurs, just to get upset about it my advice is to unplug your computer, the internet is not for you.

If you don't like what a site has to say you can find out who registered the domain name by using whois.net or another whois service. That information is publicly available along with when the domain name registration expires.

Thing is "hate speech" sounds really horrible, and most people would agree you should not have to be subjected to verbal abuse just because you are of a certain background,or wear certain clothes.
Most people would agree with that right?

Sure. But what are the governments doing with these "hate speech" laws?
They are deploying teachers against 5+year old kids who happen to repeat any number of "hate words" that they could have heard absolutley anywhere in today's screwed up thing we call our civilisation.
Get those kids on government "pre crime" databases quick sharp!

www.abovetopsecret.com...

So,what else are they doing, are they using this idea of "hate crime" to empower any other shady shennanigans I ask myself?

Then I remember this,a while back mind you,few weeks...

www.abovetopsecret.com...

www.telegraph.co.uk...

Yeah,Go UK Government,Pervert those hate/discrimination laws!!!

Can I please bang my head on the desk again now?
Thank you.

Not much. You can appeal to the hosting company not to renew the guy's registration on morale grounds, but it's a business and they most likely don't care.

You could write the guy a physical letter and explain why he's wrong for creating a site like that in the first place. Not that he will listen. But you never know - he might.

Isn't it possible that someone who sets up a hate site like this might be screaming for help psychologically? Like someone begging him to come change his mind because he knows that racism is wrong - the same way someone about to commit suicide often leaves telltale signs?

OK....

1) You're right, the hosting company will tell you to get lost...

2) If you wrote me a letter complaining about the content of my site, I'd write you back and tell you to go forth and multiply...

3) Absolutely not...People set up sites for all kinds of reasons...

Yanno what ? How about the next time you find a site that offends, you just click on by and go elsewhere...Kinda like turning off the TV if you dont like whats on...

Simple concept, yeah ?

Save our trolls.

Save our trolls.

Trolls are an essential part of the internet, without them - people would take life too serious and that's when things get silly.

I believe you have the right idea here. This is just like anything in life you don`t like, and just because one doesn`t like it, that doesn`t mean it should be outlawed. Why frequent a place that has hate in it or just don`t agree with what is said?

When you start thinking about taking away any kind of freedom that we all have and enjoy, you end up not just hurting one group of people, you hurt everyone in the end. And you can not take away part of a freedom, it`s a freedom for all, not just the select groups of people you want it to be for. That makes you just as bad as the group you want to hurt.
