Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin justified on Monday Russia's claims for the Arctic continental shelf and urged other nations to resolve all controversial issues through dialogue.

The Arctic territories, believed to hold vast untapped oil and gas reserves, have been at the center of disputes between the United States, Russia, Canada, Norway, and Denmark as rising temperatures lead to a reduction in sea ice and make hydrocarbon deposits under the Arctic Ocean increasingly accessible. This has made the extent of the continental shelf a matter of national interest.

I've been keeping an eye on this one for a while now. It seems to me that the Russians have a fair claim if they can back it up. I know the US, Canada, Norway and Denmark etc will be very interested in this development.

The Russians are already sitting on some very large reserves.
I'm sure some sort of deal will be worked out if not, That's all the world needs is a massive game of king of the hill at the North pole.

It seems that the only Nations who have a claim to the artica would be Canada and the Russians, as they take up most of the North... America, Denmark, and the Nordic Countrys can lay claim to smaller areas... It will indeed be intersting to watch how this plays out.

not that i get hung up on semantics, but doesn't that qualify as "international interest"?



This is just another issue that will continue to plague the international community. I think the last thing we need is to further complicate the current situation, and so coming to an agreeable decision is probably not a bad idea.

Well there is enough oil in the ME and Central Asia. Not to mention all the other recent finds. It seems that Russia is setting themselves up for a global supplier to the huge future markets of India and China.

yes, i too, have been keeping an eye on this. its been quiet for months now about this. seems to me this could/will be thee major flashpoint for developed nations in the future. as natural resources and fossil fuels become scarce, the arctic will become more and more of an issue. for whatever reason, several reasnos actually, i believe that 2020 is going to be a really contentious time for the world. seems to me this is when world war 3 will break out. on several fronts and all over the world. the arctic being the main theatre. if your interested why ive chosen 2020 as my date id have to do some researchin because ive just seen the date so many times on diff things that to me all pointed to 2020 being the start of a huge war. and i dont mean mind power or signs or anything like that i mean news articles, facts, trends....

I certainly hope that all countries involved would agree on some mutually agreed plan where all would benefit. Main reason for wars are resources, and there are a lot of resources up there.
By the way, i think Russian federation made a mistake by opening this can of warms. All others are sort of united against them while fighting each other in this diplomatic game.

Isn't this supposed to be one of the many entrances to Hollow Earth, supposing the Hollow Earth Theory has any gravity at all? Maybe Russia is looking for their own little quaint entrance to a far more civilized society with far more advanced technology? Who knows, but isn't Putin supposed to be behind the scenes

The EU is thinking about the arctic ? hmm ... not up to the task, even including Norway's supposedly impressive technological advancements ... Only the big guys sit in the arctic !
