I can tell you exactly why i use cash instead of cards......................marketing
Every single time you purchase something it helps build up a picture of your spending and the marketing people use that to advertise products to you. It can actually lead to more and more junk mail.

I get hardly any junk mail simply because i use cash whenever i can.

The only junk mail I ever get is for insurance companies and previously subscribed services, such as Virgin broadband etc. As I've used the same insurance companies for a number of years, I don't see how your theory holds water, as I use my card for pretty much all purchases that come to more than a few quid.

As for junk Email, all I get is bloody viagra and penis extension ads and I can honestly say I have never bought either

Sure we are required to have a bank account. But not a debit card.
I've got an ATM-card. Lets me get cash to spend if I need to.
But I prefer human tellers.

If I need to carry "huge wads" around, I tend to have a decoy wallet, with ~$20.
And the rest hidden somewhere on my body

The chavs around here are savvy to that kinda thing. They hunt in packs (cowards), hold you down and go through your pockets.

It really is lovely area I live in don't ya know.

I suppose on consideration,

The issue of the pro's and con's of using Cash or Cards, from an individual preference point of view is I suppose another subject.

The real issue is that refusing to use Cards, and use Cash is seen as a "Sign" of being a terrorist, the Anti Terror Police.

Whilst at the same time the same organisation has a Flyer on its site saying about people having too many credit cards.

It is the blanket aspect of report "everyone" almost.

I have been thinking as well about why they have done this, for this Hot Line and add.

Well they are by using such ubiquitous descriptions of Terrorist activities hoping to cast the net wide enough to get a high response.

It is almost like a very very good Marketing sales campaign.

What are they after really, let’s be fair how many Real Terrorists would be caught by this?

In the UK 7/7 and Patsy 9/11 none of the "Terrorists" acted like this, they had cards, one not only spoke to neighbours in the UK he was a prominent member of the community doing youth work etc......

So what are they really up to, why cast the net so wide?

DATA and I am not talking about the "Reported" "Eccentrics" that may land on their files.

ITS THE REPORTERS, and callers to the hotline they imho are interested in.

The Building blocks of a civilian spy state. I am sure they are more interested in those who phone them than those who are "Reported".

Names, address's all details (and I bet you are interviewed in person to if you phone them up, even if it just a "Cat Woman" next door and they know this.

They will know those who are willing to act as unpaid spies within society, and once the person has done it once they then have your acceptance, a relationship to build rapport on, and an ability to use you for life as such.

They are conditioning those people to act like this, and become their eyes and ears.

I am sure many who call up will get a "Buzz" rush from it to, and subconsciously be playing the James Bond fantasy or Avengers without even realising it.

Probably as well in a very subtle way to recruit others the callers know.

The more ive thought about this, the more sure I am this is their real aim.

I thought it was too blunderish and stupid for them, and they are not as stupid as they make out sometimes... and one thing we always forget... they are playing the Long Game, planting seeds all the time.

Kind Regards,

Elf

I would say you've been lucky because it's a simple fact that card companies sell data to marketing firms. However you could also consider another reason to use cash. When advisors are trying to reduce peopels debts they tell them to use cash because psychologically it is very different to using a card. People have been shown to spend less when they actually hand over cash because they have a real tie to the money.

So that's another reason to use cash

True, but I am a multiple graduate of the
U.S. Anti-Terrorism Awareness class. (for what it's worth)
And somehow I've always managed to bypass negative events...
Either way, I hardly ever have to transport copious amounts of bills.

[EDIT] Recently I had to travel through exceptionally bad neighborhoods at odd hours.
I dressed in a way that made me seem less worth messing with.
If people are making a wide berth around you and are holding their nose, despite you being clean, you know you're on the right track...

If I saw this anywhere in America, I'd laugh at such a thing. I don't know anyone other than a paranoid old lady or someone with a mental disorder that would actually all such a number.

I would be more concerned with how this advertisement "works" with what that David Icke guy does...because, he incorporates a lot of scare tactics. So, while someone could easily dismiss him as a quack, when the government plays along and puts up a poster like this, suddenly he becomes credible.

People can exaggerate sometimes, I think, especially here on ATS. If you would just ignore the stupid sign with the eyes on it, it wouldn't mean anything. But, there are instead many people taking this as signs of something ominous that we should be worried about. It makes it worse to be worried. Whether you are worried or not, any potential system will catch you just as much as any other person.

Ever think they're trying to scare you, and that they win more with everyone on ATS because lots of people on this site try to have eagle eyes for signs like this?

Well they are snooping more and more:

MILLIONS of Britons face being snooped on by a new European intelligence agency which has been handed frightening powers to pry into our lives.

Europol can access personal information on anyone – including their political opinions and sexual preferences – if it suspects, rightly or wrongly, that they may be involved in any “preparatory act” which could lead to criminal activity.
-snip-
This could include covert monitoring of people who deny the existence of climate change or speak out on controversial issues.
-snip-
Among personal details that can be gathered and stored are “behavioural data” including “lifestyle and routine; movements; places frequented”, tax position and profiles of DNA and voice.

Where relevant, Europol will also be able to keep data on a person’s “political opinions, religious or philosophical beliefs or trade union membership and data concerning health or sex life”.
Express UK

So if one of your neighbours does not snoop on you they will.

Toe the Line & Agree or we will criminalise you!

Ok that is just frightening, because you disagree with global warming you can be spied upon, really? You can be spied upon just because you disagree with the government? Whatever happened to being allowed to have a differing opinion and openly debating it! This is the basis of free speech!

At the risk fo sounding melodramatic, this was exactly what the Stasi did in East Germany. Now peopel will bring out the old argmuent of "nothing to hide, nothing to fear" but that is very much the wrong way to look at this. We are supposed to be free, we are supposed to have privacy because it's something humans have always needed. Without it we turn into paranoid and dangerous people. For example everyone in East Germany thought a file was made on them but it was only around 10%. The people were paranoid and scared.

Also while some people may openly profess their sexual preference, what if someone influential is secretly gay? They can then be blackmailed and influenced by the government!

This is awful, just awful.

EDIT

I have advised people before now of some basic security measures that everyone who is involved in voicing their political opinions should use. Firstly, abandon social networking websites. Actually the big and more pressing reason to abandon those is because they are a goldmine for identity thieves. Secondly, start using an encrypted VPN to access the internet. Also people should use full hard drive encryption. There are many free utilities out there for this, truecrypt is still the best because it's open source, which means the government can't hide any little secrets in it

I find this so worrying to, which was why I started this thread so people knew.

It is totalitarian.

I would like to share your belief in Encryption etc, however it has gone beyond that now

PROJECT INDECT

Encryption, passwords etc wont help anymore.

The encryption would at least stop you from being investigated because you posted your opinions on a forum (as long as you don't post your name of course!). An encrypted VPN works like this.

Before anything leaves your computer it is encrypted, depending on the VPN the level of this encryption may be between 32 and 128 bit and 128 bit encryption is not crackable on the fly. I know some people will say the government is always ahead of us, but official investigations are ongoing regarding terrorists who use encryption and the government can't crack it.

So anyway yeah your computer encrypts it, it then goes to your ISP who not only cannot read it, they don't know what kind of traffic it is (torrents, email, video etc) they can't tell. It then goes to the server you are connecting it to. Your IP is now hidden because whichever website you connect to uses the IP of the VPN server.

So you post your opinion on a forum and all the authorities get is the IP of a VPN provider. The best part is that VPN services are by law not required to store records (at least not yet) and certain providers go out of their way to dispose of records.

Sorry if i seem passionate about this but i think the government is trying to spy far to much on our lives. While i am not ashamed of any of my opinions, and i most certainly do not commit criminal acts, i am worried about my privacy and i am worried about being labelled a threat when i have done nothing wrong!

I know but if you research Project INDECT it will place cookie type hidden sofware on every PC in Europe automatically (obviously with the ISP's help and the Virus/Protection companies, no play ball no licenses) and as mcuh as possible round the world.

So the monitoring sofware will be in the PC invisable recording everything.

Even therefore a proxy wont help, or encryption as the file will record the encryption password you type etc....

I wish myself it was differant.

Kind Regards

They can't because every hacker in the world will descend upon their computers and find it. If a cookie is put on a computer via the ISP then the information has to come down the line, simply view all traffic going into a computer with a new installion and you'll find it. Data can be hidden but raw data shows up and you know something has been sent. You can't disguise it as noise on the line either, hackers are aware of that technique.

Still despite the tracking cookie, the VPN encrypts all traffic from your computer, a tracking cookie won't matter because they won't be able to read it.

You don't quite understand VPN encryption. It encrypts the data using a random key, you don't type a key in. Any and all traffic they intercept would be unreadable. The keys change very time you connect.

As for encrypting drives, well again you don't quite understand (i hope that doesn't sound insulting!). You see if you encrypt your entire drive then when you start your computer, before windows even loads the encryption software boots from a small section of your drive. A section which contains nothing but the encryption program. This is to prevent the exact kind of attack you are talking about.

You type in the key, the system boots up and everything you now do is encrypted
A cookie wouldn't do a damn thing.

I used cookie as an anology as such, I dont know the exact type of Software its probably some type of worm with key logging etc software.

I dare say it will be like the new generation of non government virus that is boots and placed in the BIOS...

But I get your points to, encryption seems the way forward for people to protect their privacy, to stop this from being placed on the PC, and any info gained would be encrypted anyhow.

Who would have thought normal people with nothing to hide, but who just to keep their personal affairs out of prying government eyes would need Encryption on their pics of their last Birthday or bar b Q?

Semms ridiculous but that is the times we live in.

Elf

Wll what if you're swapping some very private photos? I'm pretty sure most women or men wouldn't be best pleased if they sent a raunchy photo to their partner and the government intercepts that and stores it away somewhere!

There are i suppose some very legitimate uses of privacy software

The Daily Mail in the UK has run with this Story Now.

They have some further info on the actual Reports being made and what if reported happens.

It is even more Worrying than I originally thought, and includes also watching childrens art and behaviour:

Neighbours who keep the curtains closed and a boy who likes to draw guns among 'suspects' of terror hotline

A schoolboy 'obsessed' with drawing pictures of bombs and guns, and a neighbour who liked to keep his curtains drawn, are among dozens of people being reported to a police scheme aimed to unearth potential terrorists.

Police complete background checks on all individuals reported before a panel meets to decide if any action needs to be taken.

Interventions can range from a simple chat, to a complex mentoring and counselling process.

Some cases include:

* A school pupil who is obsessed with drawing bombs and guns;
* A bus passenger expressing racist views;
* New neighbours behaving oddly, including keeping their curtains drawn; and
* A vulnerable loner who suddenly received visitors to his home at irregular times.

The Daily Mail

The fact a child drawing could be reported to this hotline, and then is discussed and backround checks are made is the worst imho.

With all the violence on TV, in Cartoons, Computer games etc, he is only copying what he has observed.

Imagine the police coming to talk about your children because of what they have drawn, under the guise of "protecting" vulnerable people.

It seems to that many people are actually ringing this hotline, and it is being rolled out across the UK.

Elf

I missed this but at last some common sense or maybe just spin?

(Reuters) - Britain's advertising watchdog said on Wednesday it had banned a police advertisement encouraging people to report neighbors whose activities raised "suspicions," saying it could offend innocent citizens.

Too Right!

Now that one advert was banned what will follow though?

Elf
