Post something inane.

Anything on ATS truely serious is ignored.

The sheeple in general are still and choose to remain asleep.

On a side note, if you ever read a post you think is absolute genius, then let us know. The “Complaints/Suggestions” tool is not only there to tell us about the bad posts... You can always point out to good posts as well...

That point alone makes this thread even more useful. Most of us have read great posts that have been overlooked. Some of my preconceptions have been shot to death in threads I haven't posted in. They've caused mini-seismic shifts in how the world is perceived. Flagging the best posts is a good idea

PS. Kiwifoot...I stared at Slayer's applause gif for a minute thanks to your post and agree entirely

Am glad to hear you escaped the evil glare buddy! Close one though!!

And I agree too, I'm gonna be using that suggestion idea from now on for the really good posts I see!

I've seen several examples posted in this thread of how NOT to receive applause.

I am always honored and surprised when I get applause, it isn't necessary in my opinion but still nice.

I can't speak for everyone but this is part of my formula:

1). Original content. Large blocks of copy and pasted material with two lines of original thought isn't going to get an applause. Share your own thoughts and research.

2). Civility. Huge factor. I can't count how many times I've had my hand on the applause button for a well written post, only to see at the end how another member is attacked or ridiculed. I can't applaud posts if they are condescending or arrogant.

3). I also try to take into consideration the type of poster and the right brain vs. left brain. It doesn't seem fair to only recognize one type so I try to hand out applause evenly. For a poster known to be analytical/technical, I like to hand out applause for research and facts. For a poster known to be more philosophical, I like to hand out applause based on unique perspectives and for seeing an angle that others didn't.

While we're on the topic, I can't stress enough that agreement is not a factor. I've even applauded posts with opinions that personally nauseated me (seriously) but they met the above requirements of presentation, content, and civility.

And to be honest, I generally don't applaud short posts. It's very rare. They don't have to be novel length but posts that are only a couple sentences or a paragraph might get a star but not an applause. I only remember applauding a handful of short posts.

The above is all just me, though.

OK fair enough.

Anyway...

OP If you received an applause then think about what you contributed that garnered that pat on the back. I agree that there are many great contributions here at ATS that I'm sure go unnoticed [MODS can't be everywhere] and many more that do get the recognition they deserve.

Just keep plugging away at it.

PEACE

Actually no, I like to treat everyone equally including myself. Mods are simple human beings like each one of us and they can be susceptible to human corruption and devious minds like any other would. The thing is I dont have much trust in human species. It is because of lure of greed, ideas, corruptible nature (behaviour) we humans as in whole are killing the only pure thing which is nature. No one is untouched by it, yes some may be hard to crack so to speak but it's our DNA which is half virus and there can be no escape from that.

What I said in my first post:

The honest non-popular method is to make good quality threads and post

The not so honest popular method

is only based on human nature not limited to Mods but in real life too including the work place, school, university etc. I only follow one motto "Always expect the unexpected"! Meaning don't feel safe and careful but be alert and have that positive and negative impact in your mind but measure it with human nature. I am not sure if I am able to explain myself clearly so I won't stretch it further.

I feel simultaneously flattered and violated ... it happens a lot.

About getting the mod clap ...

Like I tried to point to earlier, a man can have the admiration of a thousand of his peers ... if the achievement of such external validation is at the expense of one's mirror reflection it will be hollow and for not. But if one receives appreciation in any form from another by merely being one's self and without seeking it, the gesture will be rewarding and true.

In short and imho, applause only matters and only has real meaning if it isn't sought.

I just received my twelfth applause today.Everyone of them
was a surprise gift and I love gifts.I just try and post on what
I like or know.If a mod wants to give me an applause,I am very
grateful.
Don't waste your time trying to get applauses.Focus on good posts,
good threads and you will get them in time.

A forum where you can't give or receive stars. You've managed a star in
one and half pages. Not gonna happen in this thread.

I was just doing some changes to my profile and I noticed for the first time the Applause thing. So I did a search and came to this thread and some others to find out more about it.

It's not so easy to get applause I reckon. I come on ATS every single day. I've been a member over a year, started 26 threads, and made over 800 posts. I always try to stay within the rules, I think maybe 2 of my posts have been deleted, and even those I didn't understand why. I always try to see others point of view. I have made some suggestions to admins for improvements and reported some members that needed reporting.

I think I'm an ok member, but still I havn't recieved any applause

So I must not be as brilliant as I think I am.

I'm not that bothered though, I'm happy with the way I conduct myself. I don't intend to change my ways. If I make a bad post I apologise and or correct it. I'm definetly not going to say things in such a way that I might get applause. I say what I really think.

I'm just letting anybody who hasn't got any applause know that imo they should not worry about it. Maybe you will get applause if your post catches the attention of a mod and it hits a chord with them. Since they are very busy people thats not going to happen very often.

I make it a rule to say thank you for applause. If someone takes the time to appreciate a post/thread with more than a star...always say thanks.

Oh no! the U2U always says...do not reply...so I haven't been doing this! Thought it wasn't allowed *hangs head in shame.

I'll go thank them now! Thank you!

I am always shocked and flattered when I get one.
I am usually confused as to why I get one but am always appreciative when I do.
I always make sure to say thank you.
I have even started my own virtual applause for the mods.
Only 2 given so far

1 for trying to help someone as a member and not a moderator.
(yes I know they are members first)
1 for a post that had me unexpectedly in stitches laughing my butt off first thing in the morning.

As was mentioned here already...a thank you is good no matter where it comes from and its always nice to be appreciated.

...as other Staff have commented, we pretty much have our own buttons that need pushing to magic up a shiny applause.
Each Staff Member has different buttons...

Mine are pretty simple:

- Anything that basically sits me on my butt and makes me go *WHOA* in thought will get an Applause from me. Don't worry, I'm from New Zealand, so thats easily done!

- Anything that makes me spit my coffee on the 'puter screen in laughter. Quick witted humour is likely to have me going clickee-clickee.

- Any reply I read where the person ISN'T descending into the mud that is being thrown at them. If they reply without buying into the flame-game, they reply calmly and clearly focussed on their point - then they get a point from me.

- Any thread/reply that challenges my own beliefs and opinions in such a way that I *learn* from them, causes me to more deeply analyse what I hold as 'truth'...that doesn't necessarily ridicule me for what I hold as 'truth' but rather presents their 'truth' in non-threatening comparison. That gets a big ol' bazinga!

...and most importantly:

- Any thread/reply that castigates Australia, Australians and anything related to those rotten unsportsmanlike under-arm bowling ilk! DAMN YOU TREVOR CHAPPELL!!!!!

Cheers.

Really ?

Then it is about time you read some of my threads.:p
Then again...

To the OP.

The most important thing is that a thread is informative. Easy to look at may help...
Understandable. ( Like not only for the author and a subject specialist. Not all of us are highly educated. Like me.)
And it has to be your own work. ( I will explain.)

Everything you will add to a thread is probably said before by someone, in a better way. Not important. Copy paste a lot ? No big deal. Just show why and how in your own words. Make it yours.

Any new info. will be appreciated but if you provide your info with a well thought out opinion preferably with sources the changes are, you will get noticed. Eventually it will end up in an applause sooner or later...Maybe.

Please understand that this advice is my opinion, nothing more.
For all I know it could not be further from the truth. It will definitely earn you a flag and a star from me, when I come across such a thread.

Good luck

Please keep your sexual preferences out of this conversation MR moderator. May I suggest bigbilliesbuttticklers.com as a good place to start!!
