These books will do nothing but subject you to the biased "mainstream" christianity that takes man-made traditions and somehow ties them into what they think is the true christianity. Unless you just want some knowledge on theology in general, I wouldn't recommend the college textbooks at bible colleges. Most of the references given in this thread so far are great reference books. I'll tell you what I use as a whole....

Main Bible: New King James Version of the Holy Bible with Center Column References.

Other Translations: Original King James Version, New Revised Standard Version with the Apocrypha, New World Translation.
