A British Eurosceptic MEP has unleashed a volley of insults against the President of the European Council.

Nigel Farage, who leads UK Independence Party (UKIP) MEPS in the European parliament, said Herman van Rompuy had "the charisma of a damp rag".

He compared the former Belgian prime minister to a "low-grade bank clerk" and said he came from a "non-country".

The attack, which stunned the chamber, came as Mr Von Rompuy made his maiden appearance in parliament in Brussels.

"I don't want to be rude," Mr Farage began, before launching into a personal attack lasting several minutes.

"Who are you? I'd never heard of you, nobody in Europe had ever heard of you," Mr Farage thundered, as noisy disapproval at his intervention in the chamber rose.

Brilliant, I love Farage he tells it straight although I don't really know what to make of UKIP as a party.

Personally I think UKIP are the greatest joke in European politics.

They are so anti-Europe they have highly paid Euro MP's who don't mind taking the European cash.

UKIP are like a bunch of spoilt brats who think we should all adhere to their views or we are all wrong. This outburst simply proves that point.

Yea, most people who are into EU politics are sick to the teeth of listening to them.. Its always the same old crap.

They complain loudly about everything while wrapped in their Union Jacks but never propose any legitimate policies. All they want to do is complain about the current shortcomings of progression whilst ignoring the actual reality of the overall picture. They are an embarrassment to the Brits IMO.

They are definitely one of the big reasons the UK has little hop in the EU. If they copped onto themselves, the UK could begin to shape policy even more.
