Murder-Suicide Note Posted on Facebook: Could Father, Son Deaths Have Been Stopped?

www.cbsnews.com

LOS ANGELES (CBS/AP) Stephen Garcia clearly didn't want to live without his ex-girlfriend, Katie Tagle, or share custody of their infant son, so in an apparent murder-suicide, the angry California father killed his child, then himself. Hours later he was still telling the world just how he felt, in a suicide note on Facebook, possibly posted by a friend.

This is just horrible. Apparently the poor girl applied for a restraining order several times but was denied. Now it is too late. This happened in California, could it be the restraining orders were denied due to lack of funds/manpower? Will the judge be held responsible, or lose their job?
And what is this getting to with these facebook postings? A while back some mom posted her child's death on twitter a couple minutes after it happened... sigh...

With all due respect, since this interesting topic does not meet the criterion for Breaking News, I will move it to the "Current Events" thread.

Thank you for your patience.

This is tragic. It seems odd how people may sometimes feel incapable of articulating their grief about the circumstances of their lives to others; had the young man done so, this might have been avoided.

But sadly, we are seeing more of these Facebook suicides as time goes on and more people use social media as a normal part of their lives.

What would the difference be had he left a tape recording, or a simple note?

Tragic in any case.

With regards to the mom posting on twitter that her child had just died....

if she's used to using twitter to communicate, this would seem like a natural thing for her to do. That's just my impression of course.

Tragic all the way around.
