Discovering A New Earth 430 Light Years Away

www.sciencedaily.com

"The material is forming at just the same distance, or close to the same distance where the Earth formed from the sun," Dr. Lisse says.

To find the planet, astronomers used images captured by the Spitzer Space Telescope. It looks for infrared light or heat radiating from the dusty materials. The images also confirm the rocky fragments forming the new planet are similar to materials found in the Earth's crust and core.

"So, the body that's going to form -- the planet that's going to form -- isn't going to be this gas giant with incredibly thick atmosphere," explains Dr. Lisse. It

Woot?

430 light years away means that 1 generation will never reach there.

It will take 860 years to send to and receive a radio wave from there.

So is this the closest "possible" source of ETs that we "will" come across within a million years?

Or maybe 430 light years isn't much compared to the size of our galaxy (100000 light years). Maybe I can assume that there are thousands of Earth like planets in our galaxy alone.

Also, the planet is only forming... But if we can study this for, oh, say, a billion years, we'll be in the money.

Well the planet has probably already formed, the light is just now only reaching us. I could be very wrong though... (probably am
) How long would it take our current shuttles to travel 430 Light years?

I think this is great... its about time humanity starts looking to the stars once again. I wouldnt mind taking a few adventures even......

Cool post OP

We-eell, what we're seeing is the state it was technically in 430 years ago, but we can't interact with it in any state less than 430 years ago from its perspective (unless there's something about traveling at the speed of light which I don't understand, which there is), so...

Arrrgh, light-years are so confusing!

I'm a believer in the secret space program. Or at least the fact that some of us have spacecraft and have probably checked it out already. I heard awhile back that they had found an eathlike planet. I wonder what they have been doing there...So many possibilities.

It would take roughly 75,000 years in NASA's space craft to travel one light year... So 32,250,000? I dont think I could last that long on a space craft... We better come up with better techno stuff.

Yeah and by the time we traveled one light year the position of the galaxy might have moved a little... and after all that travelling we will be off course. If there is a creator, he sure knew how to make us deal with our issues on a tiny llittle planet by trapping us on one very amazing/delicate/complex rock!

Edit

Think though about the technology it took just to view and analyze the chemistry of a planet that far away... Im sure the Government or officials know of closer planets we can check out?!

I'm even talking way out on the fringes of possibility; if we traveled near the speed of light, rather than at the (relatively) ludicrously slow speeds we can travel at now. And by "Interact" I just meant any sort of communication, even just bouncing light back and forth. We will always see them as they were 430 years ago, until we're right there... And then we'll be seeing Earth as it was 430 years ago!

I continue to get a headache from this thought.

At least it will take at least 430 years before we can rape and pillage that world too.

You might want to look at what a light year is and how it relates to distance, its a lot longer than 430 earth years.

I guess you have a point, althought it would take much longer than 430 years! The wiser our species becomes the better off the other planets will be... but until then... maybe thats why the government keeps such techno secret? I beleive in our species... but i wonder how long it will be until what i imagine us accomplishing actually comes to pass... That makes my mind dwindle more than those 430 light years :-p

With...

With any radio technology. Radio is light. Light can't move faster than light. We would have to send some other sort of signal.

but we need to get there before life is formed, otherwise its possible that a very different type of life happens there, and we wont be able to live without killing everything ...

I can't believe they did not even bother to state the name (or designation) of that system's star.

At light speed it would take almost 11 generations!
thats almost twice the generations between Americas' establishment and today!

Okay if we can warp that "Star Trekkin'" still (I assume it is a New Earth) how do we transfer the population, or who is worthy or not?

Both of these are extremes, the belief in this as a potential truth (like UUP to 'fuel a warpdrive'
available on Mars) would still have to justify the ongoing denial of real food and medicine
to the living planet were on, while further trashing it with consumption of natural reserves
and resultant pollution of air and water here!

Is it worth 'it'?
Was it ever "IT"?
Compare them against History and we are sadly misdirected, there's life in the sea!
