Egypt reveals Tutankhamun

news.xinhuanet.com

CAIRO, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- A DNA study shows Egypt's famed King Tutankhamun who suffered from a club foot died of malaria and that his father was the "heretic" king Akhenaten, Egypt's antiquities chief Zahi Hawass said on Wednesday.

"We found evidence from DNA that proves he had very severe malaria,"

Tutankhamun (1341 BC -- 1323 BC) was an Egyptian pharaoh of the 18th dynasty (ruling during 1333 BC -- 1324 BC in the conventional chronology), during the period of Egyptian history known as the New Kingdom. His original name, Tutankhaten, means "Living Image of Aten," while Tutankhamun means "Living Image of Amun."

Maybe they hit him over the head with a club, to stop his pain and suffering?

That's just weird, they have been studying his remains for years and they only find this out now...

Have they determined yet what the actual cause of death is? Was it the blow to the head, or malaria?

There's still debate about whether malaria was the cause of death or not. Everyone's favourite boogeyman, Zahi Hawass has his ideas and others have theirs. Tut's rib-cage was badly fractured leading many Egyptologists to see that as the cause of death. A fall from a chariot is an idea...

Malaria can be carried without symptoms.

Interesting. The last docco I watched on Tut was on Discovery and I believe it was about 3 years ago. By the end of the hour they were adamant that his death had something to do with the fracture in his skull. Seems like this research has completely shredded that theory which doesn't make sense to me as the current explanation for the hole in the back of the head is that it was used during the mummification process in order to extract the brain, but I was always taught that the brain was removed via the nose. Strange... guess we'll never know.

Hi...

This is from the article...seems they have room for both theories...

Tutankhamun died of severe malaria, Hawass said, citing the results of the DNA project carried out by a team of Egyptian scientists on ancient mummies. "We found evidence from DNA that proves he had very severe malaria," Hawass said. "He was ill, weak, walked on a cane. When he was 19, and got malaria, he fell, how we don't know, maybe he fell in the bathroom, " he said, adding that "When he fell, and was weak from malaria, he died."

I still have a suspicion that his father pushed him, but I can't be sure...depends on what age the father was when his son died (or was killed) or...maybe there is no conspiracy, and things just happened back then like they do now... Unfortunate, but hey...that's life.

I was quite confused now as well.. I have always heard that he died from a blow to the head... Not that he fell..and fractured his ribs. Too many stories here.....Now the malaria. Weird..
