CNN reported that the US is having trouble keeping up the production demand for bullets and small ammunitions since the war on Terror started.

Sources are saying that contracts may be awarded to foriegn countrys such as Canada and Isreal to produce the bullets that our soldiers will be using.

Stop the insanity..... That in my view would clearly be a security threat. All weapons of war used by our soldiers should be manuafactured in this country regardless of the cost.

Our government seems to be more concerned with perscription drugs coming into the country from Canada than a possible useless bullet manuafactured in another country.

Buy American regardless of the cost.... we are cutting off our noses to spite our face and someone needs to step up to the plate and expose this type of idiocy within our government

There is plenty of Ammo. We still have stockpiles from the Coldwar. My brother was on maneuvers in the Czech Republic a few years ago and he said they were using ammo dated from the early 80s.(Bradley Linebacker AFW) They are most likely having trouble keeping the stockpiles to the Coldwar levels....... but I'll try to find some more links.

Here are some links that touch on the subject briefly. Last night the top guy from the armed services commision? was interviewed and said keeping all munitions production in the US was his goal. Upgrading the factorys that produce the munitions would take time though. He gave Bush credit for building up gradually each year since he had been in office but others interviewed criticized Bush for not taking into account the shortage and the possible ramifications of a shortage in this war in Iraq. The longer the US remains in Iraq in large numbers and the longer the fighting continues we may well be forced to give contracts to foriegn countrys to meet the minimum requirements. Geesh Now how dumb is that to go to war without a dang bullet to put in your gun ? People doing the planning have obviously overlooked that small detail.

Thanks for the links.

I think that they thought the war was not going to be this drawn out. I think they truly believed that they had enough stockpiled to make it through..... not the best planning. Gen. Shinseki should be given an apology by the current administration.

On a related story, it is interesting to note that one of the reasons the M16 is no longer fully auto and now has triple-fire instead was because of the ammo expense/rate of expenditure experienced in Vietnam.

Not just that, but why give soldiers trained for assault rifles fully automatic weapons. Theres no need for them to be spraying around ammunition, an assault weapon is not a machine gun, and theres no reason for one to have full-auto, thats best left for those trained in the use of weapons like the SAW or various other automatic weapons.

Canada is more likely to produce a useless bullet then Americans why? Besides that sounds better then Americans having their cars made in Mexico or shoes made in China where the workers get paid next to peanuts.
