I was born wild
in a society
where the only wilderness
lay in the mind.
Throughout my exotic childhood
I was stuck to the wall
in sensible
slaveable routine
Each day my parents sloughed to work
And I trudged off to school
following my fellow humans
on the boring march to death
Be Wild! Be Free! Be Alive!
My innermost being cries
in barbaric tones of disbelief.
But, oh, the pain of walking wild
With the buxom blond simpering "Be like me"
And the beautiful brunnette singing "Be like me"
And the solitary stranger sighing "Never be like me"
"Conform" they whispher
in mindless media chants
while I cry out to be released!
To be a savage!
A heathen!
Unfettered and free!
To hurl through the deepening forest
with my faithful wolf friend by my side
To dive deep, deeper, deeper still
In the cool fathoms of secluded lakes
To run through meadows
To soar through trees
To experiene Nature, Humility, and God
Before my life
comes
crashing
down
to six feet below.
I think these thoughts
And though my soul cries out
for freedom and release-
I merely straighten my spectacles
and trudge on to death.
