Darwin descended from Cro-Magnon man: scientists

Article source

SYDNEY (AFP) – The father of evolution Charles Darwin was a direct descendant of the Cro-Magnon people, whose entry into Europe 30,000 years ago heralded the demise of Neanderthals, scientists revealed in Australia Thursday.

Darwin, who hypothesised that all humans evolved from common ancestors in his seminal 1859 work "On the Origin of Species", came from Haplogroup R1b, one of the most common European male lineages, said genealogist Spencer Wells.

"Men belonging to Haplogroup R1b are direct descendants of the Cro-Magnon people who, beginning 30,000 years ago, dominated the human expansion into Europe and heralded the demise of the Neanderthal species," Wells said.

Nothing much of a surprise here, most of Europe descended from "Cro-Magnon".
Although scientists also now think that the Cro-Magnon were in fact early modern man, the robust nature of their recovered skeletal remains owing to their hardships, and not due to a difference in genetics or being another species.

There is rather misleading terminology here.

I will add to this by showing why I say that.

"Homo sapiens sapiens: from 90,000 years ago"

"The first traces of modern humans are now dated tentatively as far back as 90,000 years ago in the Middle East. In Europe, where they first appear about 35,000 years ago, they are known as Cro-Magnon from the place in the Dordogne, in France, where remains of them are first discovered in a cave in 1868."

"The humans of Cro-Magnon, and their predecessors in other parts of the world, are anatomically almost identical with people today. They differ in being taller and more muscular; some of their skeletal remains reveal (contrary to modern preconceptions) a larger brain than today's average. They are classed, with us, as Homo sapiens sapiens ('knowing knowing man')."

They are talking like "Cro-Magnon" is a different species. According to these texts it is not a different species. It is Homo sapiens sapiens.

So basically they are wasting their breath, as a vast majority of natural Europeans are probably of this same lineage.
