Hello, I'm pretty new at posting threads but I have been watching everything about the sky and space and check out what I found. Not sure if it is an asteroid since it looks like some kind of branching coming off of it. But it does cause you stop and look at what it is. Again I'm not saying its a spaceship or ufo or anything, of all i know it could be an asteroid. I'm actually hoping Phage gets on here to research and come up with something for me. Anyway here is the permanent link:

Not sure what I'm supposed to be looking for here, that orange stringy thing left of centre?

Also anything on that scale would be giHUGE!

The deep space images which appear on Sky Map and other similar programs come from the Digital Sky Survey project. This project took photographs taken from various sky surveys and scanned them into digital form. The color image is created by combining two images; one through a blue filter and one through a red filter.

The red filtered photograph of the area you're looking at comes from the Schmidt telescope and was taken on October 4, 1989. The blue filtered photo was taken on June 17, 1974. The squiggle only appears in the red filtered image. While it is possible that this is an actual object which was not there when the blue photograph was taken, it's more likely that it is a speck of dust on the photograph which was picked up by the scanner.

Here is a screen grab for you.

I got no idea... Maybe a point of light, the camera is on a long exposure and a little movement?

after i discovered it, i went to try and get it into high quality but i'm not that great at that stuff. anyway you can tell if we turn it into hq there is alot of detail on the image and the branching off just seems weird. almost reminds me of a starter with its wires hanging off for a car but i don't think that would be in space. anyway if you move around in skymap near the image other anomalies are present but you have to search for them and be zoomed in.

The data is acquired here:
archive.stsci.edu...

You can get a GIF image but to get the full dataset for each plate you need to download the FITS format file and use other software to get the details. I use fitsview. It's pretty rudimentary but it gets the job done.

hey phage your source didn't show anything can you generatethe data there with the link to the data you used the site to corroborate. also sky-map states that and DSS agrees that they use the most upto date imagery. Meaning that what you see is coming from thenewest data set
You must select a different survey to get earlier data from that menu on sky-map.

You have to ask the source for the data you are looking for by inputting the coordinates.
