This is good stuff. When you look at the neighbors of Rome -- Gauls, Germans, folks to the east and south -- you can't help but marvel at how the
Romans were considerably more advanced. I like hearing about the Why of it. I've heard a lot of theories, like they were more accepting of other
people and cultures than most ancient people. Also, when they saw advantages in the technologies of enemies and/or neighbors, they didn't mind
adopting them. I wonder if the idea for the army tool was a Roman invention, or an improvement to or adoption of something they discovered in their
travels.
