A great historian like Howard Zinn dies and the mainstream media misses it?

surftofind.com

Born in Brooklyn in 1922, Zinn wrote the landmark leftist manifesto, "A People's History of the United States," which became a cultural touchstone for a generation. He was a professor emeritus in the Department of Political Science at Boston University, where he taught from 1964 to 1988.

mod not: news threads must share the same title as the article.

I don't think this is acceptable. Howard Zinn was a wonderful person whose spirit deserves to live on, and if we don't even know who he was, it is an awful shame for all of us.

We should all remember him as a man who refused to stay silent in the face of abuse, because when we are apathetic and we do nothing to redress injustice, we are unwitting accomplices.

Really. why would mainstream media even bother with the mention of someone who spoke and wrote so profoundly on the ability of people to make changes. We might see his obit on Fox with a tea party mention, but on network-it is laughable. RIP.

no...they didn't miss it, they're just not allowed to talk about his life and his body of work. why?...because he does not promote the wealthy and the way the wealthy want history portrayed.

this is pretty standard...when is the last time anybody has seen Noam Chomsky on T.V., or even heard about any of his dozens of books that he has written. they both represent a threat to power and wealth, by simply providing a different point of view

Exactly what part of the whackjob was great?

His leftist BS?

His twisted thoughts on freedom?

His lunatic ideas on the Constitution?

This guy reeked of many things, but greatness is not one of them.

What does the article you posted have to do with your headline?

By the way, it doesn't appear the media have "missed" his death. Just do a Google News search for Howard Zinn. There are thousands of articles about him. I would hardly call that a miss.

Also, in the "Breaking Alternative News" section you are supposed make sure your headline matches the headline (at least in spirit) of at least one of the articles you link to.

I am tired of those who label and dismiss people. Howard Zinn was not a leftist. He was a wonderful human being who touched more lives than anyone can possibly imagine, and ALL his critics are petty in comparison.

I read "A People's History" in college, when it was recommended by a prof. I've been influenced by it ever since.

I think at another time, say the 1930's or 1960's, this would have been big news to a lot of people.

It's just that the country has gone so far to the extreme right that a mere leftist seems like a horrible totalitarian menace.

You're not too likely to find too many people today who even know who Zinn even was, especially not on the internet.

I was deeply saddened by Zinn's death, which I heard about on mainstream media.

Democracy now did an hour thing on his death. Cant sit still on a moving train is a doc on him that is good. I was saddened greatly by his death. Leftist? I don't know his poilitics. All I know is he told true history from a different persepctive than the ruling systems. He taught alot about the way the world works, and what really went down. What is the difference between left and right anyway? Only place I can tell a difference is in academic theory. Even then certain military and monetary issues and "truisms" supercede right and left supposed differences.

I posted my thoughts on Zinn on another ATS thread a few minutes ago, but in summary, his book "A People's History of the United States" was one of the best history books I have ever read. Yes, his politics were a bit far to the left for my taste, but that does not take away from the fact that that book is an amazing source of real American history.

And I saw Zinn's obituary in the local newspaper, so the mainstream media is paying some attention, though I don't think the article did him justice.

In US History, I had the oppurtunity to read Zinn's A People's History.... It was wonderful and opened my eyes to all that is out there. His death was not proclaimed in the mainstream, I feel, because he was like a lot of us, he thought differently and refused to accept the watered down history that is often extolled. He will be greatly missed by those who had a chance to read his works.
