Nearly one in five Americans said they lacked the money to buy food at some point in the last year, according to a survey co-sponsored by the Gallup organization and released by an anti-hunger group. The numbers soared at the start of the current recession, but dipped in 2009 despite the continuing rise in unemployment. The anti-hunger group, the Food Research and Action Center, attributed that trend to falling food prices, rising enrollment for food stamps and an increase in the amount of the food stamp benefit. More than 38 million Americans — one in eight— now receive food stamps, a record high.

This is a staggering statistic if true. Is the private sector so depressed that there aren't enough jobs to employ those that want to work thus the need for food stamps or is it that people would rather get food stamps and not work? A combination of both I suspect.

I have no doubt that hunger in 3rd world countries is much worse....

Is the US thru this economic crisis becoming a 3rd world country with the super rich and a dwindeling middle class and a growing jobless class of poor dependant on handouts?

The nation's economic crisis has catapulted the number of Americans who lack enough food to the highest level since the government has been keeping track, according to a new federal report, which shows that nearly 50 million people -- including almost one child in four -- struggled last year to get enough to eat.

Nearly one in five Americans said they [u]lacked the money to buy food at some point in the last year.

This statistic seems to be rereported every other week. I've had friends that were between jobs and got hungry enough to the point of theft, .but they're doing fine now. Best thing to do is get a credit card and drive your self deep in dept.
