The war in Afghanistan, which will soon involve a hundred thousand American troops, merited barely a paragraph. There was no mention of victory over the enemy, just a reiteration of the president’s pledge to begin a withdrawal in July 2011. Needless to say there was nothing in the speech about the importance of international alliances, and no recognition whatsoever of the sacrifices made by Great Britain and other NATO allies alongside the United States on the battlefields of Afghanistan. For Barack Obama the Special Relationship means nothing, and tonight’s address further confirmed this
I’m proud of the fact the United States and Great Britain, together with key allies like Australia, liberated 60 million people in Iraq and Afghanistan while much of the rest of the world stood by. Those protesting in London this week should be grateful for the freedom and security they enjoy at home through the sacrifices abroad made by the British and American armed forces. They should also cheer the liberty that tens of millions of Muslims now enjoy from Baghdad to Kabul after being released from tyranny. Confronting evil and defeating it is a great achievement that should be celebrated, and the world is a far safer place when the Anglo-American alliance stands united in advancing the cause of freedom.
It's because the threat doesn't exist.
