According to my resident paleontologist/archeologist...after asking about a dozen questions I wasn't able to answer about dating, where it was found, etc.:

First impression: "They look like oars, not any kind of bone that I've ever seen. Is he sure they're bone?"

Second impression after zooming in: "Might be whale jawbone or rib, carved into oars by the locals."

Third comment after realizing that the object shown for scale is a coin: "...no idea, but they appear to be carved, so without more information it's going to be difficult to identify them."

...

Neither of us recognize the coin, so we're just guessing on size...they're what, about 1x3 inches or so? Could be anything, really.

I was an archaeologist in the UK for a few years, before I hurt my back, and I can say that they definately look like worked bone... but I have no idea of the animal... although the edges look a little like sutures (where the parts of the skull connect) BUT they are too straight for that.

they almost look like they are made from clay... or bones (the long bits) set into clay (the flattened bits)

OR feathers that have been covered and set in a light clay.

However, I'm not familiar with the more exotic creatures, as have only worked at archaeology in England.

Very strange.

You may want to post them on TalkAboutWildlife.ca and see if someone there can help.

I am involved with an amature find...now dig, that I found some pottery and a kiln that is no where near where it should be, I was going to tell you that you had small mammal carcuss of sorts that was recent enough to still show the major bones ..ie...back and ribs..if lucky a skull if not of the cartilage family of fishs....but I'm not formally edjumacated of the likes.

and I spell bad..

ETA i forgot to welcome you to the forums....WELCOME..

and keep up the research, its these kind of finds that get over looked and things lost or forgotten! Or worse never found!
