schwarzenegger advert baffling!

recently there has been adverts with arnie saying "when can you start" on an advert that promotes california even with vanessa williams is in it, fair enough right!? but i have never ever seen a continent promote itself this way.
does anyone have a clue???

Its a tourism advertisement. A lot of our local state governments put them out, and I guess some go overseas (assuming you're not from the US). They've been on for quite awhile over here.

Also: since when is California a continent?

First, I'm a bit surprised you're from the UK based on your English (unless from Ireland).
Second, I think you're referring to an advertising campaign to promote and attract California's tourism industry.
Third, California is not a 'continent' but one of the 50 United States, although sometimes I wish it wasn't.

California is a state in the the nation of the United States of America on the North American continent. California is not a continent itself.

I believe the ad you are questioning is the California tourism ad that has many famous Californians advertising their state, not their continent.

Uh, I think the gist behind that commercial is that its the job of everyone in California to have fun so "when can you start?" In other words: come have fun in California. Man, with all the clever British humor you guys turn out, you can't figure that one out?

yes i know i messed up with the continent, i just couldn't think of the word state at that moment.
what i am trying to get to the bottom of is why he says "when can you start", I mean how could anyone pack up bags and start over in california without a job etc, I do not understand the gain from it, what is there to do in california???

Dude, what do you not understand ?? its not about starting over in california, ... its about vacationing.

what is there to do in california ? EVERYTHING, besides LA and Hollywood , california is a big and versatile state.

Brits who reach fame move to california, ... not the other way around kid.

dude im not a dude, and LA and Hollywood isn't that much interest to brits trust me. we have ibiza for sun rather than paying the odds to "live it up" in california
most famous brits come back from california because they cant stand the excited american attitude towards us brits (no offence to u USA'ers) but thats what most famous people have said etc

I don't know what you're looking for here. It's a perfectly harmless tourism commercial. Nothing says you have to buy the product sold in any commercial, you know.

David Beckham has recently recorded a new commercial to encourage tourists to come to California. I’m not a huge fan of the Beckhams, even though they only live up the road and have sons; you’d think we’d be great friends. But really, of all the wonderful things there are to see and do in California, I just don’t see why David Beckham should be the one to encourage you!

Come and see the amazing beaches, the national parks, the great cities, enjoy the weather. You should come, come to California. Maybe even go and see Beckham play football for his remaining time at LA Galaxy (although be warned, apparently the fans are shouting horrible things at him because of his desire to move somewhere else).

But if you can, come and find a Hank Moody to hang out with, not a David Beckham. You’ll have far more fun!

The add is really just shorthand for "Our state is financially knackered and we need money".

Such a shame though... Cali is my favorite state in America. I love the people and the way of life! The closest thing in America to Australia.

Cut to Stewie Griffon's swinger party music. A sun bathing blind nymph peers to the camera and says:

"People think life in California is one big vacation. But it's really a lot of work".

Wipes to:

"We have board meetings"(x3) recalled to us by the epitome of National Socialist Germany - circa 1940, 'cept the last guy - he's PC, people on skateboards, snowboards and surfboards.

Some cyclist reminds us, with an angry smile, that "We're always playing catch up" as he burns his last reserves and wishes how he hadn't posted under the alias cyclotouriste on The Thorn Tree.

"We're really just a bunch of pencil pushers" Said by a guy who's falsifying his golf scorecard (and possible a nod to Predator).

"We work with some real characters" said by an animatronic witch at Disneyland with all the well known toons strolling about.

Mr + Misses Tubbs call back to the camera that "We're always working weekends" as they heave their enormous bodies into Universal Studios to munch on some massive turkey drumsticks.

Some stoners agree on the sentiment that "We burn the midnight oil" whilst sat like a troupe of hippies around a beach camp fire.

"Hey, it's a dirty job" told by some lass getting a colonic by-product rub.

El Wino de Maximus says "But someone's got to do it"

Rob Lowe, seemingly pondering his favourite adult film turns to the camera and then hits out with "So if California seems like your kind of work..."

Some old gin chugging bint then says "We've got one question"

Cue Arnie: "When can you start?"
