If this had been declared years ago I might give it some credence.

For years moderate muslims have been saying they don't agree with the extremist views, yet they've done nothing and said very little.

Now, I think people have finally reached a point where their sick of hearing of 'terrorism' and are no longer frightened little sheep. Fear is turning to anger and the clerics fear a backlash directed towards them and their followers.

Just a political move, like most things in religion turn out to be.

The Fatwa

We, the undersigned Imams, are issuing the following Fatwa in order to guide the Muslims of North America regarding the attacks on Canada and the United States by the terrorists and the extremists. In our view, these attacks are evil and Islam requires from Muslims to stand up against this evil. In the holy Qur’an Almighty Allah orders Muslims, "Let there among you be a group that summon to all that is beneficial commands what is proper and forbids what is improper; they are the ones who will prosper." (3:104) "Believing men and believing women are protecting friends of one another; they enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong; they perform salat and give zakat..." (9:71) "Those who, if We establish them in the land (with authority), establish regular prayers and practice regular charity and enjoin the right and forbid the wrong..." (22:41) Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said in a Hadith; "When people see a wrong-doer and do nothing to stop him, they may well be visited by God with a punishment." Therefore, it is an obligation upon us (Imams) to inform all Muslims around the world that Muslims in Canada and the United States have complete freedom to practice Islam. There is no single city in Canada and the United States where MASAJIDS (Mosques) are not built. In all major cities Islamic schools provide education to Muslim children about Qur’an and the Islamic traditions. Thousands of Muslims perform Hajj every year and travel to Saudi Arabia with complete freedom and respect. In the month of Ramadan, both Canadian and the United States governments recognize the occasion and greet all Muslim citizens. Muslims pray five daily prayers in mosques without any fear or restrictions. Muslims have complete freedom to pay Zakat (poor due) to the charity or a person of their choice. Muslims have complete freedom to celebrate their festivals openly, publicly and Islamically. Muslims enjoy freedom of religion just like Christians, Jews and others. No one stops us from obeying Allah and His Messenger (Peace be upon him). No one stops us from preaching Islam and practicing Islam. In many cases, Muslims have more freedom to practice Islam here in Canada and the United States than many Muslim countries.

In fact, the constitutions of the United States and Canada are very close to the Islamic guiding principles of human rights and freedom. There is no conflict between the Islamic values of freedom and justice and the Canadian /US values of freedom and justice.

Therefore, any attack on Canada and the United States is an attack on the freedom of Canadian and American Muslims. Any attack on Canada and the United States is an attack on thousands of mosques across North America. It is a duty of every Canadian and American Muslim to safeguard Canada and the USA. They must expose any person, Muslim OR non-Muslim, who would cause harm to fellow Canadians OR Americans. We, Canadian and American Muslims, must condemn and stand up against these attacks on Canada and the United States.

May Allah save Canada, the United States and the entire world from the evil of wrong doers. Ameen.

Peace,

Magnum

According to the Quran (look it up yourself) it states the when you cannot defeat your enemy outright, live among them, become friends to them, live in their land and prosper and grow in numbers, then when you are strong enough, fight them and overcome them.

This is somewhat paraphrased but it is what it means. Do your homework. If fact everyone really needs to understand what is the end goal for Islam. World domination and conversion of all, period. So next time you see that friendly cleric down the street or whatever, remember, like a bear or lion, as long as it gets it's way it will leave you alone, but if it gets hungry or you stand in it's way, all bets are off and your dead meat.

Example: The Palestinians were very skillful in resistance, warfare and peace treaty. They fought, got the poo poo bombed out of them and were essentially destroyed, made peace with Israel, got well, and went back to terrorism and warfare. It's all these people know to do.

First make peace (by the way if they do they do not have to honor such agreements with infidels), get strong, wage war, if you lose go back to the false peace treaty.

Don't be so deceived. Like robots, 1.5 billion muslims will do what they are told. Bet on it.

Wasn't it the same Canadian Muslim group that wanted to ban the burka in Canada? Not only its a beautifull country from what i've seen some years ago, now i also know why all those fellow countrymen moved to Canada before/during/after WW2, the climate is so much more calm cool and collective then over here, maybe its the abundance of space everybody can live in...

I'm afraid I'm going to have to agree with blueorder. And it gives me no pleasure, because if Muslim officials were genuinely and unconditionally denouncing terrorism I'd be the first to jump and cheer.

A group of Canadian and U.S. Islamic leaders on Friday issued a fatwa, or religious edict, declaring that an attack by extremists on the two countries would constitute an attack on the 10 million Muslims living in North America.

The key part of this declaration is in bold I'm afraid. There's no "...attacks by extremists against innocent people are condemned", only "attacks on Muslims are condemned". Big difference and I think by apologising for this key difference in terminology we're being overly hopeful and perhaps a little naive.

many on here know my stance on Islamic fundamentalists, and I must say...

About damn time!

One of the main reasons I have always been against the Islamic causes is because the imams and the moderates have never attempted to take back their religion from the extremists and the fundamentalists. I sincerely hope this is the beginning of a movement to do so, and not just another empty promise.

already see a big problem

" (9:71) "Those who, if We establish them in the land (with authority), establish regular prayers and practice regular charity and enjoin the right and forbid the wrong..."

it means something like this, those new immgrants that come to my land, and when we give them homes, and a place to practice prayers , with authority they shell not do wrong to our people !

they are talking like its a islamic country, when they say " if We establish them in the land "

its all worrying ! i wouldn't like to see a giant muslim mosque next to Eiffel Tower

i bet those crusaders are rolling over in their grave reading this

Nah, humanly impossible. Since when did someone discover a way to actually guarantee any outcome from any group of humans?

Or are you suggesting that once Muslim, a person is no longer human?

There may be aspects of Islam that suggest what you say, and there may be some who would act that way, but the fact is, the vast majority of Muslims would act in a civilized and respectful manner in accordance with the rest of the Qur'an, which is in fact very similar to the good words of most religions.

There are good people and bad people in every religion. Muslims are no better or worse than any other. People are people.

We've been crying for a long time that the local Muslim community was seen to be silent on the presence of extremists in their midst.

So now I have to say Thank You!

This is an excellent step to take. I hope to see much more of this in the future. These kinds of fatwa will go a long way to prevent the kind of "home grown" extremism that has taken place in Europe. This is absolutely essential in fighting the message that we know is being given still, in some places, by Imams with extreme views.

Congratulations and sincere thanks for taking this step.
Please keep it up.

An individual should be judged by his actions, but certain conscious choices and lifestyle decisions influence the likelihood of you doing something.

In my opinion there is no "true" Muslim- like you get idiots such as Tony Blair talking about what a "true" Muslim is, like he has read his religious Islamic texts anymore than the "extremists" he pretends are not "true Muslims"

This life will lead one into grey areas and contradictions- I for one try to look at the individual, but in terms of my society, in the west, in the UK, I oppose the increase in the Islamic numbers in my land- anyone who thinks that an increase in Islamic numbers to 10,15,20% (or whatever) will not lead to an increase in community strife, lack of cohesion and in increase in intolerance is deluded- some people are soooooooooo "tolerant", they are loyal to ideas, not to reality

Sounds like Christianity to me.

Muslims are not evil like so many Americans seem to believe. I think this is a step in the right direction but I dont think it will help the prejudice already im place by the mostly white Christian America.

I reckon this is more for non-muslim consumption than trying to stop extremists. For a while now, many non-Muslim peeps have complained that the so-called "moderates" don't seem to stand up and act against the minority causing the trouble, now they can be seen to be doing that. This could also help other moderates feel more at ease at reporting their extremist fellows.

The extremism is in a person or an organization is not a binary entity (like on/off). There is a whole spectrum of extremist feelings and beliefs, I can imagine. So actually, the fatwa might help to keep moderates - moderates. It won't turn extremists into moderates.

i believe you mean this verse

[9][71] The believers, men and women, are Auliyâ' (helpers, supporters, friends, protectors) of one another; they enjoin (on the people) Al-Ma'rûf (i.e. Islâmic Monotheism and all that Islâm orders one to do), and forbid (people) from Al-Munkar (i.e. polytheism and disbelief of all kinds, and all that Islâm has forbidden); they perform As-Salât (Iqâmat-as-Salât) and give the Zakât, and obey Allâh and His Messenger. Allâh will have His Mercy on them. Surely Allâh is All-Mighty, All-Wise.

i think its clear but if you need more clarification i will certainly be happy to provide it to you by looking in to its interpretation.

but it will take time because im not qualified translator nor interpreter

thanks for your efforts, the only reason I quoted the bit was because it was included in that statement issued by the Imams in Canada (displayed in full above)
