I'm interested what other info masonicon can bring to the table, so here are the Wikipedia entries for the Dyson Sphere and the Globus Cassus.
The Cassus seems likely enough, it's an open-source plan to convert Earth into a giant space-station! Earths mass is not reduced in any way by it being hollow, only it's density... The benefit of this is more 'living space' due to greater surface area. (outer diameter in the Saturn range)
While it is believed that some of the design variants commonly described – specifically those based on the Dyson shell – are impractical, if not physically impossible, design variants of the sphere based on orbiting satellites or solar sails do not require any major theoretical breakthroughs in our basic scientific understanding for their construction.

Of all the reasons why a Dyson Sphere is unrealistic, quoteing because of a computer game interperation would be one of my last.
The problem is, that we dam well better find away to harness all of our suns energy one day, if we ever plan on moving past our current Type 0 Civilization status.
