This will all be blown way out of proportion and will be across the media for days, with many linking it to al-Qaeda.
Chances are, he wasn't directly linked or even met an al-Qaeda operative. Random fundamentalist, probably unstable, decided to create havoc. Judging from the reports, it was not even a sophisticated device.

Yeah, so you think the US is going to attack Nigeria now becuase of this guy. HAHAHHAHAHHAHHAHA.
You understand, of course, that there are 57 OIC countries where muslims plan attacks against the West.
Also you understand, of course, that Venezuela is part of OPEC and Saudi, an ally in the oil business is currently on good terms with us. That will change in the next 2 years but for now everything is peachy.
Nice try to divert an incident of Isalmic terrorism on US soil.

WHY did the press and the White House jump on this as a terrorist attack?

Huh? Where did I state this?
None of the 19 hijackers on 911 was from Iraq and Afghanistan, so this would mean that Nigeria will not be attacked

And you know who and whom I haven't met? Ok.
Does this have something to do with the topic or have you resorted (as usual) to personal attacks and flaming?
Crikey.
#NW253 Myth No 5 - The EU's Schengen Agreement played no part in allowing a 'terrorist' on board a flight. Schengen doesn't cover Nigeria

Of course, our leaders love the prospect of a terrorist attack. We go running into their arms for protection, sung to sleep at night whilst all our democratic rights are swept away to the mellifluous tune of ba ba black sheep.
In the mean time, the religious or ethnic group (who the media wish to blame) pretty become target practice for jingoistic editorials whilst towns are effectively carpet bombed in order to please us.
Funny how the world works, eh?
