Polluting pets: the devastating impact of man's best friend

news.yahoo.com

PARIS (AFP) – Man's best friend could be one of the environment's worst enemies, according to a new study which says the carbon pawprint of a pet dog is more than double that of a gas-guzzling sports utility vehicle.

Ok, now I think this is getting ridiculous. I am all for researching the effects of climate change. And Im still on the fence myself. But dogs? Worse than cars??

I really feel like any old scientist is trying any old thing to A, get published, and B, get his name in the msm.

What does everyone else feel about this? If this has been posted before, my bad. Havent been on in months.

This scientist is absolutely retarded, dog's do not require "DOG FOOD", big corporation makes it to bank off them.

Watch now they're going to start taxing dog food, and I'll be feeding my dog my food. This is absolutely retarded.

So, in short this is the CO2 religion's equivalent of placing man at the center of the universe and animals as beings of low worth. Who'da guessed it would go there?

You're right it's ridiculus, as a matter of fact it's beyond ridiculus. I can't believe they are actually measuring our pet's carbon footprints now

Combine the land required to generate its food and a "medium" sized dog has an annual footprint of 0.84 hectares (2.07 acres) -- around twice the 0.41 hectares required by a 4x4 driving 10,000 kilometres (6,200 miles) a year, including energy to build the car.

Well I don't drive 6,200 miles a year and I only use my suv's 4x4 switch if I happen to be driving during a bad snow storm and I really need it, so I'll keep my dog thank you very much !

You know what, honestly I don't give a crap what my dog's carbon footprint is. I do whatever I can to reduce my impact on the enviroment, but not having a dog is where I draw the line

And the people that wrote the book, the Vales are some sick puppies......

But the best way of compensating for that paw or clawprint is to make sure your animal is dual purpose, the Vales urge. Get a hen, which offsets its impact by laying edible eggs, or a rabbit, prepared to make the ultimate environmental sacrifice by ending up on the dinner table.

"Rabbits are good, provided you eat them," said Robert Vale.

So according to them it's ok to get your child a cute little bunnie for a pet as long as after he's all fattened up and the child loves him you kill him and feed him to your child for supper

This is all a pile of BS... Or should I say DS.
They want my dog, let 'em come and try to take him, and they'll get a quick chance to measure the carbon footprint of a load of buckshot

Glad we can all agree that this concept boarders on crossing the line. Put into action, it DOES cross the line. The mere fact its being discussed is pure lunacy.

Pets should be banned altogether.

This whole pet owning fad is getting old and annoying.

Don't you see what they are doing? This is just another thing to tax when the cap and trade carbon tax scheme is passed into law next year. Everything that produces carbon, even indirectly will be taxed. You will have to report how many pets you have to the IRS. It will be all in the name of saving the environment.

Look for it all to happen fast in early 2010. The Dems will buy the votes they need to pass the healthcare bill and then it will be right on to cap and trade.

Will the Climate Gestapo be coming around with the census takers, and subsequently sizing up our beloved Pets' so called "Carbon Pawprints"? If so, I will be meeting you at my front door with the alleged "Carbon Critters", and I can guarantee that you will not be staying very long.

No biggie.

Mine can live on the food searching zombies.

The Vales, specialists in sustainable living at Victoria University of Wellington, analysed popular brands of pet food and calculated that a medium-sized dog eats around 164 kilos (360 pounds) of meat and 95 kilos of cereal a year.

My large dog eats around 400/500 grams a day as prescribed by Royal Canine and my vet.
So..
0.5X365=182.5 Kilo...
