I apologize about yet another facebook thread. Though there is some new info in it. It was not meant to be something in depth just as a little warning.

If were talking about whether the government has connections to facebook, that's another issue, where research is needed.

I think we can all agree that the information is not secure and that was the reason for the post.

Here's a FB message I received today from a FB friend:

If you don't know, as of today, Facebook will automatically index all your info on Google, which allows everyone to view it. To change this option, go to Settings --> Privacy Settings --> Search --> then UN-CLICK the box that says 'Allow indexing'. Facebook kept this one quiet. Copy and paste onto your status for all your friends ASAP

The settings have changed...and they're still very confusing. If it wasn't for catching up with old College & High School friends I would un-FB myself...

I have a Facebook account, however i rarely go on there as much as i did.

I tire of it very quickly. I am tired of people adding me who i used to go to school with. However i was not friends with these particular people, not to mention i haven't seen some of them for almost six years.

A case in point is somebody who i went to school with sent me a friend request. I was never friends with this person. I never once had a conversation with him in my entire time at school. Yet he sent me a friend request. Suffice to say i ignored his request, only for him to shortly after send me another friend request! Now rather than press ignore, i just let the requests pile up, and leave them.

For those people who have 300+ friends, how many of those can you count as being true friends? How many do you actually contact through Facebook on a regular basis and how many contact you?

I've brought up the issue of privacy with people i know, but just get sneered at, when it's in regards to Facebook. I feel Facebook is making people feel privacy is just something to be thrown to the wind and forgotten about.

I was just going through my FB privacy settings when I got this message:

Worried about search engines? Your information is safe.
There have been misleading rumors recently about Facebook indexing all your information on Google. This is not true. Facebook created public search listings in 2007 to enable people to search for your name and see a link to your Facebook profile. They will still only see a basic set of information.

So, it would seem that your friend had just heard a rumor.

Yeah, I have the setting too. Everyone does. But the setting doesn't go to the extent the that rumor said. The rumor is that Facebook indexes all of one's information for Google while in reality, all Facebook indexes is the existence of your page so that people can find you.

I came off FB ages ago, there is only so many times I can endure being "poked" and "super poked."

Joking aside, i find the whole FB thing pathetic and infantile, especially the crap apps, and the gazzilion people i dont know or cant remember trying to add me, the constant emails, having to come up with something witty to say in your updates, and then of course the privacy issue.
My friends and family have already got my email address and phone number, they know where i am and what i am doing!!

I use Facebook to keep in touch with people that are too far away to see often. I share pictures there so that they can see what's happening where I am. It's that simple. Safeguarding personal information isn't hard; you are NOT required to include all sorts of personal details. Plus, privacy settings can make it so only the people you want to see something will see it. It isn't about bragging, or proving anything, just about staying in touch, or in some cases, getting back in touch. I have some friends that I have not seen in many years, that I have made contact with through FB, and that's all good.
