Gripping stuff: the world's first bionic fingers go on sale

www.telegraph.co.uk

The custom-made motorised digits, which cost between £35,000 and £45,000, are directly controlled by the brain and yet require no surgery.

Those fitted with the device can bend, touch, pick up and point, simple actions which can be impossible with absent fingers and thumbs.

I must say, this is welcome news compared to all the shenanigans that have been going on. Anything that improves quality of life must be good stuff. The "terminator arms" are a bit pricey however
I'll give it 2 years before Chinese start making clones

It seems like this invention is a major milestone in human progress. By the time this is perfected I suspect they may have started to figure out how to coax a hand into literally growing back... but by then maybe the bionic hand will be considered even better than a real one.

The future is now, indeed!

it seems a bit unreal that with advancements in technologies like that we still have people dying from most benign things. I guess Sci-fi stories are correct in showing unbelievable technology in medicine yet many people will always die unnecessarily.

Sounds great, but will I be able to play Mozart with these on a piano or is it more a case of butterfingers?

Maybe with use and practice these things could help these people do normal things even better than someone with all their digits. Heck, they could get an extra digit or two installed and really go for it?

The rise of the machines?....Cyborg?....Quick someone....DESTROY THE CHIP!

I think in the future these bionics will be pre laid with organic circuits, allowing skin and nerves to grow over a sub dermal implant version of the current device.

You mean something like this

That robot is an amateur and the ability to play a masterpiece of sequence of harmonic frequencies on a strange object that makes a sound is not due to the fingers really. but yes you will, the video below, which was posted on another ATS thread is quite remarcable, even I don't like what this whole thing may bring

As to extra digits, I doubt it will catch on. The optimal amount of digits is 4, it's been shown in Simpsons
besides, I think the market for artificial parts will grow in another area
now why would you want to destroy that chip

these babies work by the power of your mind
no, for real, mind controls them, no need for circuits.

And no real surgery required? That's great! As much as I fear robots and animatronics, this is a real leap in technology for amputees. It's crazy how we humans can use our intellect to make such amazing things!

Edit: Mushibrain-- the videos in your post, scare me greatly. =( Scary! *puts head in hole in the ground*

This is great news for the disabled!

I just wish this was all fresh news 20 years ago, since I want a robotic replacement body for my mother when her poor health finally catches up with her completely.

Theres a girl in one of my courses who lacks full arms and I'm amazed how well she can keep up with the coursework.

I also had a friend with a prosthetic arm and a more, wing-shaped, appendage (with a thumb and one finger) during my childhood and he could beat videogames! I'm talking skill and timing games like the old Megaman series. He also was huge into art and had his ways of getting the job done.

Never underestimate the human spirit! I think if they can go that far without the same digits as us, how far could they go with gear like this?

Are you laughing at my irrational fear of robots?

No, the technology bit is cool and I love it, but just wait till your bionic hand starts choking you in a sleep
robots are like hammers, by themselves they are harmless unless they malfunction or are in the wrong hands, that's what I worry about.
p.s. no surgery required is pretty neat, but I thought you liked a bit of a surgery

There's a saying, the necessity is the mother of invention. The sad reality is that these people may have not achieved what they did if they had complete limbs. Human spirit is a mysterious thing; it perseveres when odds are against, but falls asleep when all is good. Perhaps the thirst for all the conspiracies is a real need for human spirit to keep in shape, just like body needing exercise.
