JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel triggered a fresh rift with Washington over settlement building on Tuesday by approving the building of 900 homes for Jews on West Bank land it occupied in a 1967 war and annexed to its Jerusalem municipality.
The Israeli decision drew an usually sharply worded rebuke from the White House, which said it was "dismayed" and accused Israel of undermining Obama's efforts to resume peace talks with Palestinians stalled since December.
"At a time when we are working to relaunch negotiations, these actions make it more difficult for our efforts to succeed," White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said.
In his statement, Gibbs also said the U.S. objected to continued evictions and demolitions of Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem.
Nabil Abu Rdaineh, aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, said Israel's move "destroys the last chances for the peace process." Abbas has said peace talks stalled since December may resume only once Israel freezes settlement construction.
Israel rejects the international description of Gilo as a settlement and says it is a neighborhood of Jerusalem, the city it claims as its capital.
Some 500,000 Jews live in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, also captured in 1967, among 2.7 million Palestinians.
Israel annexed East Jerusalem after the 1967 war, a move that was not recognized internationally. Palestinians want East Jerusalem to be the capital of a state they hope to establish in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Mark Regev, a spokesman for Netanyahu, had said in response to the newspaper report that "Prime Minister Netanyahu, in order to get the peace process back on track, is willing to adopt the policy of the greatest possible restraint concerning growth in the West Bank -- but this applies to the West Bank."
"Jerusalem is Israel's capital and will remain as such," he said, stating an Israeli position not recognized by world powers.
Britain's consulate-general in Jerusalem also condemned the Israeli move saying "this decision on Gilo is wrong and we oppose it."

It's funny how the US scoffed at the UN when it invaded Iraq, and are still in Iraq, have invaded afghanistan, and are increasing troops around the world, yet make claims about how other countries are destroying the "peace process". It's freakin' laughable.
Also, if the US and Isreal are "in cahoots", why the sudden clash? Surely the bankers and puppeteers behind the scenes haven't changed. Does this prove that the president still has some authority over the actions of his country? I just remember when Bush was president the US and Isreal were treated as one and the same, and now people are talking about bombing Israeli settlements, which is also laughable.
Yeah let's suggest that we bomb settlements to make peace and then give it a bunch of stars.
Actually you know that explains a lot.

Yea and those outside can only dream until they see the Israeli tank gun pointing at them, forceing them to move, whom do not want to.
Israel nowadays no longer cares about world opinion, why you might ask.
They as a country no longer care with regards to the worlds countries having a moralle authority to dictaate to them what is right and what is wrong anymore.
They are doing what their diestiny, supposingly is being. And they do not care anymore whom they take out in the process.

Thats great news. I can't wait until Israel controls the middle east from the Mediterranean to the Tigris and Euphrates as was prophesied of old. Israel should just say no to the terrorist sympathizer in the white house.
As for the province of Samaria, that has been Jewish land from ancient times. It's like saying the US can't build any new houses in California because the international community has decided it should be returned to mexico.
In fact the original UN mandate ceded Jordan and Israel to the Jews. The Palestinians can have Jordan. Oh I forgot, they caused so much trouble in Jordan that king Hussein slaughtered 30000 of them on black Friday.
What did the Jews do by comparison? Invite them on to their land and give them jobs. The Palestinians repaid them with missile barrages into their elementary schools.
It's amazing to me how many in the West willingly support the terrorists and the islamo-fascists. This truly is a spiritual blindness, sent by the devil who despises Israel. The devil hates Israel for one simple reason, it is absolute proof that the God of the Bible is real. It was prophesied in Isaiah and Amos that God would return the jews to israel, and it has been fulfilled.
Weep and gnash your teeth in futility, you will never destroy Israel though you desire to do so, deeply in your warped soul.

I don't think most people realize that since israel's conception, we've given them the same amount of OUR tax dollars, as we have to the rest of the WORLD!
Following Israel’s 2005 withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, Israeli officials reportedly have sought additional aid from the Bush Administration. Additional U.S. assistance could be used to fund development projects in the Negev desert and Galilee region. Israel reportedly suspended its initial aid request in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. Although the Administration has not submitted a formal request for these new projects to Congress, there is some speculation that the proposed assistance package could range anywhere from $800 million to $1.5 billion.
Israel is the largest cumulative recipient of U.S. foreign assistance since World War II. From 1976-2004, Israel was the largest annual recipient of U.S. foreign assistance, having recently been supplanted by Iraq. Since 1985, the United States has provided nearly $3 billion in grants annually to Israel.
Strong congressional support for Israel has resulted in Israel’s receiving benefits that may not be available to other countries. For example, Israel can use U.S. military assistance both for research and development in the United States and for military purchases from Israeli manufacturers.
In addition, all U.S. foreign assistance earmarked for Israel is delivered in the first 30 days of the fiscal year. Most other recipients normally receive their aid in staggered installments. The United States gives all Economic Support Funds (ESF) directly to the government of Israel as a cash transfer grant rather than allocating funds for specific development projects.
