This iceberg is not visible off the coast of Australia....we would have heard about it here all over the news but not a word.

This ice berg is being seen off the coast of Macquarie Island which is 1,5000km south of Tasmania.......

this thing isnt even close!

big fuss over nothing! if it was close to the mainland with the extreme tempritures the south of australia has been having lately this would have melted in no time!

The 2004 Indonesia tsunami broke off large blocks of the Antarctic ice shelf and the global warmers have used them to claim that global warming caused the breakup.

This chunk is so big is the only reason its got so far north.

Any smaller and it would have rolled and broken up.

there was just a story today of a Russian ice breaker/tourship getting trapped in the Antarctic ice for a few days till the winds changed and it could break free.

www.shanghaidaily.com...

It does not sound like the Antarctic is running out of ice anytime soon if its still trapping ships

Hmm i dont know guys we are having some water shortage issue in my state. im sure some quick witted entrepreneur has strapped a diesel engine to that thing as is chugging down our way for a well needed cold drink of water. I can see it now " Antarctic Bottled Water " when you though it couldnt get any fresher. lol

that's what i was about to say! it's not as if it's floating past sydney harbour. It's still over a thousand km's away from land. So i don't see it as that unusual..

Speaking of Global Warming/Climate Change/ Bad Juju, aren't we overdue for another ice age, by like 10k years? I could have sworn that I heard that somewhere...

No.

I am am not mistaken, we just came out of an ice age.

Ice by necessity of rising temperatures in the summer melts, and then heads northerly. This what creates icebergs. It should not be considered a sign of global climate change unless the size, and frequency of these icebergs changes over a period of time.

In any case, we need to find a way off fossil fuels, to something better, like Nuclear for example, and running everything electrically. Research it, and I think you'll find almost everything you had previously been told about Nuclear power is wrong.

[edit on 18/11/2009 by C0bzz]

Most people don't have a problem with Nuclear power. It's the radioactive waste that results that we have a problem with.

What, it doesn't produce radioactive waste? Ok...

Most people don't have a problem with Nuclear power.

One, baloney.

Two, people criticize Nuclear energy for far more than waste. Most of it is unfounded.

What, it doesn't produce radioactive waste? Ok...

Of course it produces waste.

However, it needs to be looked at in perspective. Clean coal, creates far worse waste, like thousands of tons of sludge containing Mercury and Arsenic (and significant amounts of Uranium). Dirty Coal scatters it around the atmosphere. The sludge is exempt from regulations because it's so toxic.

Nuclear waste can be disposed of in repositories. The United States has 22 billion dollars in taxes from energy companies directed at disposing waste - but nothing has been done. Except Yucca Mountain of course.

The waste can also be used-up in fast reactors (and reprocessed) in a closed fuel cycle. Had the Carter and Clinton administrations not destroyed reprocessing and the Integral Fast Reactor, we would of been on that road a long, long time ago.

That $22 billion should be spent on closing the fuel cycle through reprocessing and fast reactors. Imagine that. Nuclear power without waste, and very little mining.

Steven Chu, Nobel prize winner in physics, current Secretary of Energy, essentially agrees with me. Or that I agree with him.

Based on this link, it looks like we're on the verge of a major drop in temperature. It looks like it's happened several times in the last million years based on the global ice mass and temperature graphs of the last million years.

Temperature History

From Link - Global Ice Mass Last Million Years

From Link - Temperatures over the last 1 million, 150 thousand, 16 thousand and 150 years

It just appears that there's some sort of peak that, once hit, causes something to occur - be it sea current changes or volcanism or something else - that causes temperature to drop dramatically. It also appears we might have already peaked as discussed recently as the current "lull" in 'global warming'. These graphs would support that.

The scientific definition of a ice age is when there is year round ice at the poles.

We have been in a ice age for 3 million years,

What we are in now is interglacial period we have been in this interglacial period for the last 20,000 years.

The scientific definition of a interglacial period is when the glaciers are receding.

The only thing we can have now is a continuation of the interglacial until all the ice is gone,
Or the start of a new glacial period.

This means global warming is not man made its just a continuation of a process that has been happening for the last 20,000 years.

Humans are a product of the ice age. if there had not been this glacial interglacial fluctuation we call climate change humans would not have evolved to what we are today.

The early bipedal primates had flat-lined in evolution until the ice age started 3 million years ago.
The ice age caused one branch of bipedal primates to change into Homo Habilis the first tool maker.
www.mnsu.edu...

The stress of climate change over the last 3 million years is what drove human evolution and made us what we are.
Are the global warmers by trying to stop climate change trying to stop human evolution.

Not neccessarily. Some data sets have shown a cooling trend during the last decade...

And some data sets may have shown a slight warming but pretty much flat through out the last decade. Whichever data sets you look at though, we haven't got any warmer since the 1998 peak. So saying that warming over the last decade as "FACT" is a little misleading.

As far as the OP goes, this is certainly nothing remarkable or unprecedented. A few years ago in 2006 we had a large iceberg visible off the coast of New Zealand (where I call home
).

Iceberg off New Zealand becomes tourist mecca

This iceberg became a tourist attraction, with people flying out to it and landing on it in helicopters. Quite a novelty, really.

I'd also just like to point out an error in the news report from the above link. Upon reading I noticed this. This is the opening paragraph.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand - An iceberg has been spotted from the New Zealand shore for the first time in living memory, drawing tourists via helicopter and scientists who are trying to determine where it and several other giant chunks drifting in the country's waters originated from.

Then it goes on to say...

Williams said the last time an iceberg was visible from the New Zealand shore was June 1931.

I guess they don't classify 1931 as within living memory. But the article does mention that scientists say it is impossible to attribute the iceberg to global warming.

So this recent iceberg is barely half way to the position of the iceberg from 06, but I can just see it being attributed to global warming by some.

You're kidding right? There's absolutely NO evidence that the 2004 tsunami had ANY effect on breaking off icebergs from Antarctica.

The fact that this chunk is so huge and made it so far north is unprecedented in recent history and shows that larger and larger tracts of Antarctic ice are becoming weakened via global warming. What happens with the larger chunks is- melt water seeps down cracks to form a slick/frictionless layer underneath huge glacial slabs. Once the slabs crack up enough and friction underneath it is reduced enough by melt-water, it breaks off and slides into the ocean as free-floating ice.

The slab that this chunk originates from broke off in the early part of the decade (2000-2002). One iceberg was seen off NZ in '06, and now three years later. This is definitely not normal for the area to have clusters of that size/quantity and within that short time-frame. This is exactly why people there are getting excited and taking helicopter tours- they've never seen something like this before (unless they're over 80 years old, possibly).

So what's your point? Everybody knows the Earth is coming out of an Ice-Age and that it goes in cycles. Climatologists know this better than anybody and they aren't arguing that at all. What they're observing is a very rapid increase in global temps over the course of the past century which has no natural scientific explanation. There is currently no natural cycle, whether of Earth or the sun, that can explain global warming. In fact, most of those natural cycles are currently expected to counter global warming a bit and reduce the rate of warming for the next couple years (possibly). The only scientifically supported data which explains the recent warming is the concurrent/parallel increase in CO2/other greenhouse gases since the industrial revolution.

Also, as for the pseudo-scientific notion that the "entire" solar system is warming- that's actually false. Some planets/moons are actually cooling right now. And the ones that are warming can be explained by their own self-contained natural cycles and not by any kind of increased solar output.

Your chart there has the name "Joe D'Aleo" on it. He's the founder of The Weather Channel and a well-known biased skeptic of man-made global warming. He really hasn't many credentials on the subject of climate. Especially since he studied local WEATHER more than global CLIMATE (as a climatologist would). They're two different animals. D'Aleo is essentially a rich news weather-man.

Here's some actual scientific data from NASA GISS:

According to the vast majority of scientists who actually study global climate, the past decade was the warmest on record. It is an indisputed FACT, so captaintyinknots was correct. And 2005 is now the warmest year on record globally, with 2007 in contention with 1998 for runner-up. Globally the top ten hottest years on record have ALL been within the past decade:
data.giss.nasa.gov...

And I see you've reposted this in other threads so I'm gonna repost my other response like a smartass
:

Well, you'd have to be over 80 years old to have witnessed the last iceberg... so for the vast majority of people, it's not living memory. But yeah, someone in NZ might be alive that saw it...

This iceberg can definitely be attributed to global warming. The warming of the Arctic/Antarctic ice caps is accelerated more than the rest of the world. This points directly to a greenhouse effect rather than any kind of solar output or other natural cycle. The source of these recent icebergs was a large shelf breaking off of Antarctica in 2000-2002. That was a HUGE ice shelf, and those things don't just break off without something like global warming to give em a nice hefty push into the ocean.

You wanna talk about getting ripped off? You're focusing on the mouse in the corner of the room stealing cheese while ignoring the elephant in the room eating your entire pantry. We've actually got it quite easy here in America as compared to the rest of the world in gas prices. And taxing fossil fuels will for once take into account the full COST of them rather than letting them reign free. The oil/coal/gas industries rip us off more than almost ANY entity on this planet. Carbon taxes will be peanuts compared to that. And if these companies pass the buck to us, that's their fault because they already do. No matter what they'll make unnaturally healthy profits unless they're regulated. They effectively own our government and, like the tobacco industry, have been caught red-handed in muddying the scientific discussion on global warming with nonsense. They promote any skepticism no matter how un-supported or minute and prop it up as equal in the "debate" on global warming. The vast majority of the scientific community is left scratching their heads wondering how everything got turned into a debate when it's really quite well-supported by the hard science. This brings us to fossil fuel industries funding skeptic propaganda. See here:
www.publicintegrity.org...
and here:
www.vanityfair.com...

These rich/powerful corporate con-men ARE the ELITES. They are absolutely part of the puppet-masters of the world. They screw us over and have us in false debates in our own communities (they love to see us peons fight) while they run amok and tear up the environment at will. Do you know how much land they've stolen in the American west and in Mexico? They've poisoned, sickened, and killed innocent American families ON THEIR OWN LAND by using legal loopholes and economic warfare. It's ugly and they're trying to cover their tracks, but they won't win. They will be brought down and the sooner the better.
