I haven't read your links yet, but just a quick reaction to the notion that Pakistan's President Zardari might be in "hot water" with the press
over kick-backs on government contracts. Where to begin?
First of all, profiting from government expenditures is a world wide sport indulged in by politicians of every nation. I'm not excusing it or saying
that it shouldn't be punished where the law permits. All I'm saying is that if Zardari weren't involved in monetary circularity in Pakistan,
that would be a "flash extra" around the world and newsworthy.
Let's move on to the real problem and the real reason one would expect Zardari to start to get into trouble in the western press. The biggest problem
that the Americans/British and their humble servants/trading partners might have with Zardari is that he is shrewd, slippery and knows what he is
doing.
Specifically, pushing the Taliban out of Afghanistan and into Pakistan to make trouble and destabilize that country has backfired on the pushers. The
Taliban ran into the toothy end of the Pakistani army, positioned appropriately by Zardari, and are being chewed to bits.
One would think that would make the Americans et. al. happy, if one believed all that baloney about nation building and fighting terrorism, and if one
didn't know that the United States is in the nation destroying and terrorism business.
Zardari is starting to look like another in a long line of national leaders around the world who are in the way of bidness as usual, Uncle Sam style.
