I think it's natural. We would all like to have some inkling of what lies ahead and... despite all trend and current thought, it is most often the
unexpected... the entirely unforeseen that makes the biggest difference.
If we had a crystal ball (for lack of a better term) to give us a forecast of what was surely to come, then we would do better at dealing with it,
whatever it may be, once it arrived.
Birds often flock and change directions as if they were of one mind, by merely following the direction of the bird next to them... which is doing the
exact same thing. The trend is set by the actions of one... or a very few and then, in a cascading event, all do exactly the same until it becomes a
symphony of exacting movement. But it is the unexpected hawk diving out of the sun or the hunter upon the ground that makes the greatest impact.
The prophesy of the unexpected unknown, is what we seek so that while we are busy maintaining our social formation, we are not caught by surprise by
something else.
It is, of course, quite futile.
