Four hundred years after it locked up Galileo for challenging the view that the Earth was the center of the universe, the Vatican has called in experts to study the possibility of extraterrestrial alien life and its implication for the Catholic Church.

Funes said the possibility of alien life raises "many philosophical and theological implications" but added that the gathering was mainly focused on the scientific perspective and how different disciplines can be used to explore the issue.

Chris Impey, an astronomy professor at the University of Arizona, said it was appropriate that the Vatican would host such a meeting.

"Both science and religion posit life as a special outcome of a vast and mostly inhospitable universe," he told a news conference Tuesday. "There is a rich middle ground for dialogue between the practitioners of astrobiology and those who seek to understand the meaning of our existence in a biological universe."

That is good to hear. No religion should fear science if they really have faith in their beliefs. Fighting against reality only serves to discredit their faith.

Never thought I'd see the day when the Vatican held a conference on the possibility and how to deal with Extraterrestrial life and it gets world wide attention. This blows my mind.

Man... ze pope must not be meeting the "conversion" quota and needs more followers hehehe... had to (sorry if you take offense, I am just humoring the situation)

I wonder if some religions ultimately would attempt this, as I know they would... I hear a lot of "ka-ching" for the future galactic televangelists heheheh

I'm seeing that this is everywhere in the online-news world.

I'm sorry, but I really think something is about to go down. And I think it will be disclosure in some form - maybe in the announcement of microbes on the moons of Jupiter and Saturn, or Intelligent life.

But it really seems to me that something is on the horizon. WHY THE HELL WOULD THEY SAY SOMETHING LIKE THIS? The Vatican of all places?

This is another sign that the big"D" is soon to occure. The vatican is making a smart move doing this for yes we all come from the same creator and they dont want disclosure to overwhelm the churches.

The lukewarm response to this story here at ATS has me baffled.

This story was in/on every major news source yesterday. I rarely watch t.v. but I assume networks covered it also. Our local newspaper even carried the story. Drudge. Yahoo...it's a major story. Little response here. Hmmm

It is a fact that The Catholic Church is massive and a worldwide denomination. The Pope has a huge influence over a huge population of this planet. The implications of this story to someone who may believe that "disclosure" is coming...and is Catholic, is mind-boggling. I have a hunch that when the Pope's astronomer talks about "ET Life"...he isn't talking about a little microbe on some far flung planet.

Screw politicians and governments. Disclose via leaders of the world's major religeons. BRILLIANT!!

I truly believe the big sticking point for total disclosure is the power the Vatican have, and their fear of losing it through knowledge of non-human life forms. Im hopeful this move means that they realise it is inevitable we find out.
