North Wales police first in world to issue Pcs with hand-held PCs

North Wales police say they are the first in the world to issue officers with hand-held computers.

And the force will issue all of their 1,500 officers with the gadgets within a year.

The �8 million system will give every officer instant access to crime files and pictures of suspects.

About 70 members of the force have already been issued with one of the systems which has been developed with Microsoft.

It's reported the force will have the equivalent of 84 extra officers and save �3 million a year as the PC's replace paperwork, reports The Sun.

A satellite navigation system will show where officers and crimes are on an electronic map. The mobile computers have full internet access, can play sound and display images and double as telephones.

Supt Ruth Purdie said: "An officer using the system recently was called to a violent domestic incident. Before he arrived, he was able to call up information which showed there was a firearm on the premises and precautions were taken."
