US Highways as runways: Fact or Crap?

A few years ago, I read somehwere that one of the Presidents, i forget which one, when US highways were being built, ordered that a certain number of them be built so that in case of a Third World War, they could be converted into runways. Is this fact or fiction?

turns out it isnt true, even though at one point they had planned on doing it.

Likely true, since this is done in a lot in other nations. You'll even see that some of their highways have markings for the pilots already.

Like in Germany. I believe they build the highways in such a way that then can support large military equipment too.

fact: when Eisenhower was inspecting how the Germans used the AutoBan for make shift airstips - when he became president - he put in the interstate system. after Germany used them to distribute its defense. it also facilitated germany's ability to move men and materials around faster than the Ally's... good idea - they brought it home...
