I can't understand how people suck so horribly at choosing and electing good politicians to begin with. All of Birmingham should be deeply ashamed, it's pathetic.

What a lot of people don't seem to understand as well, is that Langford went about his shenanigans the wrong way. I don't know if you remember Big Jim Folsom when he was governor, but that was the biggest crook you ever saw! But he was an honest crook! If he was caught with his hand in the cookie jar, he would admit it, then spin things around so it looked like he was trying to help the people. Langford, in contrast, covered everything up as long as he could and ignored the people who had to live under his corruption. That is what led to his downfall.

Now if we can just get the same thing to happen in Goat Hill...

Edit to add: Auburn is already about as far down as they can be... they've lost to every team we've beaten this year!

Okay, I would like to say this: yes, there is still racism here, just as there is anyplace else, but not any worse. Also, i would like to make it clear that I am not racist, as I can't tell if certain comments here are directed at me or not (hell I grew up in Ensley, commonly referred to as THE ghetto, and it is largely African American, as are a lot of my friends and my grandfather in Ohio
). But yeah, the problem I have with him playing the race card is that it would stir up this crap, and he knows it. Also, this trial had NOTHING to do with race. Just wanted to put those two cents in

I'll try and get into this some more if i can, but, as usual, I'm trying to type around a 3 and a half month old, and spelling errors every two words bug me as they take forever to fix (he keeps grabbing/kicking my arms!!). On the plus side, he's the youngest co-writer on here to my knowledge

For those that have stated that the sentencing is proof of racism, slow down. He just got convicted today, sentencing will not happen for a while. Also he got convicted on something like 12 charges, so obviously the years begin to add up when you are convicted of multiple crimes.

Once, as they say, religion was the last refuge of a scoundrel-----as Richard Scrushy(another recent Alabama thief) would attest to.

Now, however, it would seem that allegations of racism are.

Of COURSE Langford will likely play the baffling and logic defying race-card if at all possible. An act totally shameless and cowardly that could very well feed into the same old tired stereotyping views(as seen by a few posts in this very thread).

And, if Larry Langford weren't such an obvious crook to ALL members of the community, it might actually be an effective strategy:rely on mis-informed and painful stereotypes to garner sympathy.

Fortunately, I am cautiously optimistic few will fall for it this time. Time will tell I suppose. It's really going to be determined by how many members of the black community Langford ticked off.

Luckily, that's quite a few.

Long story short, I think we all stand united down here in saying let him rot.

For clarification, and unless Im very mistaken, I think it was actually 66 charges.

Ok Obama is stealing us blind, moving us to a police state and a socilistic agenda and is guilty of treason, but he is ok cause he is black and the (not) president. But this is a mayor and he accepts a bribe or two and is in the hole for a little over 250,000. But obama is stealing millions, this guy gets 805 years and obama gets a nobel peace prize.

Its officail the human race has lost it.

You should see Mississippi. It's where Alabamans go to feel good about their state.

...he got 805 years for bribery, but there are many murderers and rapists who served less than 20?

Something isnt right here.

His bribery only works from a position of power.
Take away his position, lock him up for a while, then be done with it. Let him go.

I'd rather my tax dollars be spent incarcerating someone for murder or molestation than for something as stupid as bribery.

Great point.

Lets give all of them 805 year terms!

If we start locking up the Congress perhaps they will do their damn jobs!

When politicians betray the voters, they should get all that time. And more. I cannot understand people apologizing for a thieving politician.

the time is rediculous!! this country probably won't even be around in another 200 years...and...guess what!!...this guys is going to be dead in under 50 years, so what point does it serve to sentence a guy to 805 years. what they going to keep his corpse in the cell for 745 years.
bernie madoff "ONLY" got 150 years. common murderers (sic) only get 25 to life. my 2 cents, it just bugs the hell out of me to see such stupid sentences.

The sentence amounts to life without hope of parole. That's a bit steep for bribery and corruption. That's an appropriate sentence for murder, perhaps, or some other heinous crime where people die.

Sure you want to put away corrupt politicians, and you want it to hurt. Ten or twenty years would hurt. This sentence is utterly ridiculous.

As for the mayor's other alleged crimes, that is irrelevant. I don't care what else he did or might have done. He wasn't tried for those alleged crimes. He was convicted of corruption charges. The punishment must be imposed only for the crimes for which he was convicted.

It would not surprise me if the sentence were reduced, either by the trial judge, or on appeal. It is wildly excessive.

[Edit:] Oops, I missed it. My bad. Serves me right for not reading carefully...

The mayor hasn't even been sentenced. The 800+ years is the *potential* maximum sentence. News media constantly use the largest possible, theoretical number, in order to make it sound more dramatic. If they say the mayor faced a likely 10 to 20 years, well big deal. But when you claim he's looking at 8 centuries, that sounds really exciting.

I would be very surprised if the judge would impose the full penalty. The mayor is already 60 or so. Even if he gets only 10 years, that could be a life sentence. 20 years would be even more likely to be life. At best, this man will live long enough to get out of prison, and spend the last few years of his life as a "free" man. That should be penalty enough.

Yes there's racism everywhere, but there seems to be some confusion that Birmingham is trapped in the old days when the firemen would spray water on black people and the police would let the dogs loose on them. We are living in a different time now, things are not like that anymore. Now there are places in Alabama that are more racist than other, that I will admit to.

I'm glad he gets thrown in the can...however there is one thing I still don't understand about our justice system...

Molest a child, get 5 years...accept bribery and lose government money, get 805 years?

A politician convicted for bribery in North America......I almost don't believe it.

Stop those threads i will @@@@@.

Here in Canada we usually re-elect them, hoping they will take less than those who will replace them !
