PESHAWAR, Pakistan — An explosion rocked a women's market in Pakistan's main northwest city of Peshawar on Wednesday, killing at least 43 people in the latest attack to shake the country as the army battles Islamist militants along the Afghan border.

At least 35 people were wounded in the blast, police said. It coincided with a trip to Pakistan by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who was in the capital, Islamabad, some three hours drive away.

Casualties increasing

Inayat Ali Khan, a local journalist at the scene of the blast, said the casualties are increasing.

"The smoke is billowing out of the scene and the fire is not yet extinguished," he told Al Jazeera.

Al Jazeera's Imran Khan, reporting from Islamabad, said local officials say the car drove into a very narrow and packed market place.

"The bomb disposal squad are on the location and are looking for clues on what type of explosive was used," he said.

At least 43 people have died and dozens were hurt by a large blast in a market in Peshawar, Pakistan, doctors say.

Buildings were set on fire after the blast and plumes of smoke were seen drifting over the north-western city.

Thanks for posting this. Terrible news, my heart goes out to people in Pakistan during these difficult times.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the Iranian promise that they would hit back at US interests after the bombing of the republican guard last week?

Pakistan is a supporter of the USA (at least publicly)-so to sow chaos there will have an effect on the entire "war on terror."

See, we're so good at war we can murder people without even firing a shot! Just the arrival of Hillary Clinton has killed 93 people and wounded more than 200!

I'm sure she's overjoyed with this news. It's the kind of news that makes a trip that much better.

I hope her plane crashes.

Pakistan is justly reaping what it has sown.

For decades, the Pakistan government has used terror as an instrument of state.

Where were the so called masterminds of 9/11 trained? Pakistan

Where did the guy responsible for the CIA shooting flee to? Pakistan

Where did the 'jihadis' who bombed Britain, Germany, Spain get trained? Pakistan

The worst nuclear proliferation in history, via AQ Khans network, to North Korea, Burma? Pakistan

The multiple attacks on India? Pakistan

ISI links and training to Somali pirates? Pakistan

Attack in Iran, and which country is hauled up for providing terror bases? Pakistan

The list is endless and could go on and on....

Behind every terrorist act involving muslim insurgents, two countries involvement ALWAYS comes through if one digs deeper - Pakistan (training, logistics, infrastructure, support) and Saudi Arabia - Finance.

Pakistan has also perfected the art of ruling through chaos. It creates chaos for the west, then takes billions of dollars in aid to stop that chaos, generates more chaos and the west gives it some more aid and arms and ammunition.

Fear and chaos and an endless cycle....

I really feel bad for the West, in particular the US and Great Britain.

As far as Pakistan is concerned, their home grown monster is revolting.

Man the english really do cause problems all over the wrold, and it never stops. If they kept out of that situation, maybe this would not be happening today.
