As I look out my office window, I can see the horizon sucking all color from the sky. Its fitting that I should die at night. Nobody really wants to
die on a beautiful afternoon I don’t suppose. I had considered leaving a suicide note for my wife because I don’t want her to blame herself in
any way. I decided against it simply because the truth is unbelievable and I’m not in the habit of lying to her. The only record of my reason for
this act will be sent to a website called Above Top Secret. Why? I just need to tell someone. At least there nobody knows me but someone somewhere
will understand. I’m a four star General in one of the branches of our Government. It doesn’t matter which one. Last week a manila envelope was
delivered by special currier and it was marked TOP SECRET. My instructions were to read it, shred it, and complete the assignment. Well, I read it,
shredded it and completed the assignment. My problem is I cannot live with myself another night. After I tell you what happened , I will pull this
trigger. I don’t really expect anyone will believe me but I have to tell it. Somebody somewhere has to know. Here is what the message said…….
General XXXXXXX, You have a TOP SECRET assignment. The reason for your assignment is on a need to know basis and at this time, you don’t need to
know. Just follow the instructions and when you have completed your assignment, you will find your country most grateful to you. Alpha Omega and down
to the President of the United States will be most grateful. You are to locate a child of approximate age 10 and secure this child by what ever means
necessary. Your complete discretion is of utmost importance. Report to hanger 832B in exactly 24 hrs from now, with the child. You will be met by
someone there.
That was the assignment. I knew I had to complete it. What I didn’t know or could not even fathom in my wildest imagination was how or why I was
going to do it. Having read it and shredded it, I left my office immediately. I needed a drink of something very potent. I needed to think. After
downing a few shots at my favorite watering hole, I headed for home to think. I do live on base In Officers housing so I didn’t have far to go. As
I was driving home I noticed a school bus in base housing that was dropping the children off from their day at school. A particular child caught my
eye. She was walking alone and looked like she was about ten years old. I slowed my SUV with no plan of what I was going to say to her. “Well
hello young lady…..is your daddy by chance a soldier?” Yes Sir he is, she said quietly. “Well he must already be at the party then,” I said.
What party ? she asked. “Well every year the base has a big thank you party for all the soldiers and their children to thank them for serving their
country. Your dad must have thought you knew. But since you didn’t I would be happy to drop you off there so you can join him if you like”.
“look at my metals…see I’m a General so it’s a good thing I saw you or you might have missed the whole party”. She looked into my eyes for
a long time and then just nodded her head. I opened the door and she got in. Its no damned wonder there are so many missing kids. They are too
trusting. I fastened her seat belt and told her we were going to the party hanger right here on base. Again she just nodded. In my mind I was
screaming. What the hell was I doing with this innocent child? Need to Know……I didn’t need to know. I was following orders. I was completing a
TOP SECRET assignment. Oh my God, Oh my God, this can’t be happening. It was happening and I had reacted to orders with out thinking. Isn’t that
what good soldiers do???
