German scientists claim to have broken the light-speed barrier, which could blow away the known limitations of modern networking, but the technology is unlikely to make it into a product--if at all--until most administrators working today have retired.

Nice find we will have to see just how this develops assuming there math is correct .
It would also prove interesting to see what happens to the passage of time once you are going FTL .

If this turns out to be valid, the future computer networking capabilities would be mind blowing. Imagine how fast we'd be able to send a receive data. I'm a nerd I know. Not to mention the other technological implications this would have.

In the usual manner of not having a clue what they are saying, reporters talk crap. This is not FTL technology, it is quantum tunneling and it was discovered in 1994 in Toronto. The technology is based on the ability to force Bell's Theorem (spooky interaction) into practical use using spatial compression, or in easier terms, you make two "particles" that can open a gateway based on EPR functions, a wormhole if you will. In order to open the wormhole, you have to create two monopoles (the particle emulators) and then set them up to act as perfect non-interferometers, meaning the standing waves within the monopoles act in a complimentary fashion. Once that is done, signal can be passed between two non-local points (monopoles) in space time separated by millions of light years. But make no mistake this is spatial compression, the signal between the two gateways is still operating within the laws of relativistic classical reality and hence cannot exceed the speed of light. I have intimate knowledge of this technology, since I was the team leader with the universities and research installations between 1996 and 1997. This technology originally came out of Bose Einstein Condensate research (and the production of an Adiabatic Reactor) funded in part by the National Research Council in Canada in 1992/1993.

So, the Germans found it...lol... Bulls****t.

They aren't talking about sending a spacecraft faster than light... They can't even make a space ship go fast enough to make to mars and back in under 6 months... manned ftl isn't in our future...

So far, the experiment hasn't been duplicated. That means that these findings are unconfirmed, and could possibly be in error.

We're already using fiber optics for our networking, which means the impulses travel at the speed of light (in the fiber). We can't even use that speed yet. The bottleneck isn't the speed of the impulses traveling through the fibers, but maintaining their integrity.

Or to put it more simply, a Volkswagen moves just as fast as a Ferrari, in rush hour traffic.

Then this makes the 2nd article about faster than light I've seen on ATS where the reporter writing the article is clueless. The first one was here:

Where a careful read of the article reveals that NOTHING traveled faster than light (except perhaps an imaginary point in space).

I'm not as familiar with the quantum tunneling research as you obviously are but this sounds like another clueless reporter to me. Maybe the idea of the researchers is to make some more sensationalistic claims and get a little more publicity? However that can come back to bite their careers if their findings aren't confirmed by other researchers.

Bell's Theorem was refuring to photon pairs, being seperated and hypothised that any action performed on one of the pair would show an effect upon the other instantly (ftl) Is this what you are refuring too as a worm hole? Or is this a descriptive tool?
