you people continue to dissapoint me.
gain weight = calories in > calories out
lose weight = calories in < calories out
not hard to understand. fat people eat too much and dont excersize enough. skinny people dont eat enough and excersize too much.
only 2 things that you can adjust to gain or lsoe wieght, eating and doing work, excersizing.
if you cant grasp this, your doomed anyway.

Just to bring this discussion back to the OP's post;
My partner is clinically obese.
When she was a child, she suffered domestic abuse which made her anorexic, she was down to five and a half stone at one point (77 pounds).
Then, she was disgnosed as schizophrenic, and put on anti-psychotic medication. As soon as she started taking this medication, she started gaining weight.
Three years ago, she had a fall and suffered a prolapsed disc in her lumbar spine.
The specialist in the hospital consultant told her that she could not have surgery to heal the problem due to her weight. She eats like a sparrow, and still gains weight, and her back precludes any possibility of excercising to lose the pounds.
It is a vicious circle, she can't lose weight unless she comes off all her meds, which would probably make her the thinnest person in the asylum, and the constant pain she suffers can not be stopped with surgical intervention due to the weight.
All of those posters that have been saying, "All fat people are over-eaters and lazy" might read the above and realise that not all obese people have lived in Burger King all their lives, and that there are authentic medical reasons for their problems.
Believe me, she desperately wants to lose weight, but in the current circumstances, that seems impossible.

Roy.

Europeans refused to believe in the black swan. They had never seen one ,so they could not visualize one. I expect Doctors to be smarter ,but some things must be experienced in order to be believed.

What was true for the black swan, is true for becoming obese on a calorie strict diet. With a thyroid condition, you can eat a diet soy shake for breakfast ,lunch, and dinner. You can walk for two hours, and the next day two extra pounds will greet you.

Yes this is true of so many people. There's no point in shouting it to the skies because most people on this planet will have to experience the frustrations first hand to believe that weight can be gained without taking in more calories than being burned.

Maybe people...doctors....others....should respect people.....skinny people, fat people, people that let their kids be cheerleaders....people that talk on cell phones.....because that is the way they'd like to be treated.

The general guideline for someone's BMR is roughly 1900kcal/day. Most diet shakes tend to come in around 100kcal, and two hours of steady walking at a slow pace will burn about 325 kcal. If, as eradown implies, that's all you consume, you will have taken in 300 kcal and burned about 2200, leaving you with a net loss of 1900 kcal for that day. Which would be a weight loss of a little over half a pound.

I admit, I don't see how it's possible to gain weight under those conditions. I also can't see how one could gain the "two pounds" eradown mentions.

Enlighten me, please.

What thyroid condition causes this?

What medication is available to treat it?

See my other posts for a clue. I have even suggested a great book by the name of The Thyroid Diet. Read it. If you do not understand the power of the thyroid, it will help you more than I can.

I'm not asking you for a clue, I'm asking you for an explanation. And I've read your posts in this thread. They don't explain it. And I'm a continent away from any bookstore likely to sell the book you recommend.

How is it possible to gain two pounds of fat when your daily calorie deficit is over 1900?

Think about bloating. Think about the resting metabolic rate. When the thyroid is not working the body shuts down all sorts of major functions such as the immune system , the digestive system, the flow of hormones and the brain also functions at half its normal capacity. Yes,I was exercising ,but so many vital bodily functions had been shut I would have needed to eat like a five year old to lose some weight. If I had done such I would have eventually died from a lack of key nutrients. I probably also would not have lost that much weight.

You can probably order the book on EBAY or Amazon.com you can look up the author on the web. Her name is Mary Shoman ;she has websight dealing with the thyroid.

There are so many different thyroid disorders I think years ago my doctor said 90 which is why it's so hard for them to nail down which tests to run to determine treatment. All I can say is google the topic but the disorders are real and depending which disorder you have will cause different symptoms, I had Graves disease which caused my thyroid to over produce T4 hormone. This sped up all my bodily functions making it hard to do simple tasks such as vacuum a room without the heart rate getting dangerously high which the doctor recommended I do less aerobic activity and more stretching instead until the drug started lowering my T4. This caused weight loss for me but the treatment of me taking Tapazole a couple of years caused hypothyroidism which manifested itself as a steady weight gain in spite of the fact I returned to my normal aerobic activities a few months into the treatment.

It took 16 years for my thyroid to recover from the treatment which meant 61 extra pounds on my frame when it finally did. Yes it seems to defy logic when people say they gain weight while exercising and eating less calories but it happens to some people. Lets not forget it's not just thyroid disorders that cause this phenomena there are other medical conditions that will do this as well. All I can say to those who scuffing at the notion I hope you never discover the frustrations of gaining weight in spite of your efforts.

Isn't one of the things that messes up thyroids is all of that fluoride they put in our drinking water? If that's the case then there's no wonder there's so many overweight people.

Yes, flouride, lithium, mercury, GMO soy are all terrible for the thyroid. I have trouble finding prepackaged food in this country which does not contain soy(GMO).

You seem to be saying that the thyroid condition caused a decrease in your base metabolic rate (metabolic rate at rest), which led to weight gain.

If that's the case, then your weight gain was still caused by your caloric intake exceeding your daily needs.

Your BMR dropped below what you considered to be a healthy daily minimum (ie. "eating like a 5 year old") and you gained weight because you weren't able to burn enough calories to offset the difference between your actual BMR and your perceived BMR.

Thyroid diseases or blocks are more insidious than your post implies. The makers of healthy diet shakes had tried to put enough nutrients in their shakes so costomers would not die of heart attacks. I could not eat less and have all nutrients needed to function. Even so ,I was incredibly tired and foggy headed all the time.It was not a matter of cutting back which resulted in weight loss for me. I eat a little more now than I did when I was fat. What finally helped me was cutting out all the foods which do not help the thyroid. I now only eat foods which help the thyroid. I also took up weight lifting in addition to the aerobic exercise I was already doing.

So...

what helped you lose weight (and keep it off) in the end was:

- eating a healthy diet
- regular aerobic exercise
- regular anaerobic exercise

Hardly a shocker, there - but still doesn't help me understand how you can gain weight while eating under your base metabolic rate. Congratulations, at any rate. Keep it up.

No, I would have gained weight if I had tried to eat like most healthy people. My diet is geared toward people who have underfunctioning thyroids. You are oversimplifying thyroid disfunction.

I was also out exercising most thin people even when I was fat .I exercised everyday religiously. It was not common sense which saved me. It was the admission, that the thyroid was the root of my weight gain which enabled weight loss.

Why are people so dang concerned about other people's weight? Why are people forced to justify being fat? Can you imagine judging skinny people as being too lazy to cook and eat right, then arguing with them why they are lying about it? It is really no one's business why someone is heavy or thin.

Wouldn't it be nice if people were judged on their character instead of their physical appearance?

Can you imagine the outrage if the topic was about how physicians have less respect for bald men, blacks, or homosexuals, therefore, they receive a lower standard of treatment? That is really the issue, that people are being judged as worthy or unworthy of decent medical care based on something as innocuous as body fat.

Fat, in an of itself, is not a determination of one's health. Fitness is a much better indicator. And yes, you can be fat and fit.

The real problem with this is that skinny people with health problems will be ignored because society believes that skinny (and often tanned) means healthy. There are plenty of skinny coach potatoes with lousy diets and too high of a metabolism. You can be 50 pounds overweight and fit, which will make you healthier than an inactive skinny person.

The reason that being fat was seen as desirable at the turn of the century is because it was a sign of wealth and leisure. Skinny and tanned people worked out the field and were laborers. As people moved to jobs indoors, being tanned and skinny was a sign of leisure.

It's all cultural programming. When you dislike someone for their appearance, skin color, sexual orientation, height, etc. you are simply being a slave to the herd mentality.

Stop giving energy to this type of divisive crap.
