To the individual a few posts back who suggested bent metal or wood inside hunks of meat. Quite frankly I find that to be disgusting and cowardly. If you are going to take a living creature's life at least have the guts to do it cleanly and quickly.

We are not talking about normal life we have today but during a SHTF type situation and in that case i will stand but my method for getting rid if dogs.

During a SitX the PC rules go out the window and you survive by what ever way that you have to.

That means if you have to spring bait traps the kill dangerous dog packs so be it.

Just try to kill off a dog pack with gun fire and you will find its almost imposable as they will learn to avold you and your gun long before you can kill off the pack and they will/may hunt at night where you can get a shot at them/

I know this because the laws in calif allow farmers and ranchers to kill pack dogs and i have had to do it more then once for ranchers, In fact dog packs are one of the biggest problems because people from the cities instead of taking them to the dog pound dump unwanted dogs in the country thinking they can live on there own and they pack up.
They get wise to guns and humane traps quickly and they become extremely hard to kill then.

Many rancher i know of find nothing wrong with using any method that it takes to kill off wild dogs that are killing there farm animals.
even to putting bounties on them.

In Calif humane traps seldom work for dog packs as you will almost never catch more then two dogs before the pack will start urinating on the trap to warm other dogs that its a trap and poisons are banned because they kill endangered birds like hawks condors and eagles this leaves the spring baits like i described.

Been stocking up on ammo... Anything that comes into my line of sight and isnt waving a white flag or bearing gifts will be shot. People bearing gifts will be welcomed, their gifts will be accepted, then they will be shot. Ive been thinking about how to send a message to people who potentially happen upon my premises. I think the ol' head on a spear should do the trick!

Are you for real?
Tell me you're joking man!
That's not a funny thing to joke about you know.

Always bear in mind that the smaller breeds will go out first... they will be taken by the larger dogs...and that refers to the larger breeds like the working class types....

but also when you kill one off... well there is food for a day or two.... and it really is not bad to eat...

best thing to do is avoid them if possible...and if not kill em right on the spot.... they hunt in packs and you might be their lunch or dinner... so if you gotta trap and kill that way... fine...

Thank you. That was the origins of the post. Obviously we can shoot them, but is that the first option? What are the other options? Whould someone trap one to make a pet?

In a hard core survival sit/rep...there is not going to be another option... except to kill them in any manner you can deem feasable and safe... because they will hunt you down if they are hungry enough...

Trap em, shoot em down, poison them with rat poison, do what ever it takes and if that also means using fire bombs to take them out so be it...

hell I do not know what you are actually getting at.... you do what ever it takes to eliminate a threat and that means any threat, in any means that is workable.... acceptance of a means is irrelevant at that point...

I wholeheartedly disagree with this one.

Big cats (cougars, etc) & bears, yes. They can often be scared away from camp with loud noises, waving your arms, "puffing up" to make yourself look bigger, acting aggressive.

Such tactics will frequently work with wild animals but very seldom with domesticated dogs. Especially crazy domesticated dogs scavenging for food. Domesticated dogs are around all kinds of strange noises in the city and there's not much you can do to scare them off.

Dogs are one of the few in the animal kingdom that respond to aggression almost always with more aggression. Try bearing your teeth, growling at a strange dog and more often than not it'll go on the offensive. They are instinctively pack animals and unless you're the established "leader" they view aggression as someone competing for their spot within the pecking order.

In regards to the OP, I think this is a good discussion. If S were to ever HTF I think abandoned domesticated dogs could become one of our worst enemies.

I would advise against feeding any group of dogs in an effort to lure them back into being "domesticated." It probably won't work, and the only thing you'll get is a pack of wild dogs constantly hanging around your place for scraps. A lone dog who wandered near your property could maybe become a valuable ally if you were to feed it and bring it in.

As far as protecting yourself any furbearing techniques would work. Snares would be easiest if your supplies were limited. Traps (not the "catch and release" kind -- the KILL kind) are better but you of course must already have them or make them. Having a dog in your camp is a huge bonus; it'll start going nuts if anything wild shows up.

If you already have a dog, GREAT. If you don't, GET ONE. You don't necessarily need a large breed like a shepherd or rottweiler. They tend not to live as long and have lots of health problems in later years. The really big breeds like Mastifs are considered pretty darn old at 5-6 years. Medium breeds (most spaniels, terriers) live longer, eat less and still provide all the same benefits of having a dog: advanced warning of danger. Yes bigger dogs can provide better physical protection, but IMO that's not what having a dog is about. It's their keen ears and nose I like best, and even small dogs provide that benefit.

I caught two strays on my property one day last summer killing my chickens. I hollered while running out there towards them, didn't stop them. Fired two shots from a .40S&W into the dirt in front of them and didn't phase them one bit. Shot one through the chest, second one didn't take off even then. Took two more shots at the second one (he was alot further away -- I missed) before he took off. Didn't even run either, just sorta trotted off.

I once had a lot of trouble with coyotes getting the chickens. They were so brazen they would come within 25 feet of the front door and in broad daylight out in the open!

One day I saw a cute pup. Not realizing it was a coyote pup, I went down to investigate it. Then I saw mama and papa coyote under the tree watching. I know there were other coyotes in the area, too.

Anyway, what solved the problem for me was peeing on the tree trunks along the perimeter of the property. Mark you territory! This is the only authority and submission law of the jungle. Be sure you piss about 3 feet up from the ground. You want to be the biggest, tallest dog.

I had no trouble at all with coyotes after I began to do this. You have to keep it up periodically and especially after it rains.

Apply everything in this thread to humans, because when I first read his OP, I thought he was actually talking about humans. When it comes to dogs I'm very familiar with them, and the breed I'm most familiar with is the Rottweiler. As one person mentioned, the life span of big breed dogs especially the Molossers are usually around 7 or 8 years and they're prone to different diseases and ailments, hip dysplasia for example, but when it comes to guarding and defense a lot of the big breed dogs get the job done. Another thing to think about is sociliaztion. Dogs are like people and each has their own personality and traits, but how you socialize them plays a big factor in how they will react when placed in different situations.

If you want you can look into dogs that have already gone through training, but these dogs are not cheap. You're looking at over $5,000 a pop and thats for the lower certifications. You need to be clear on what type of dog you want, watchdog, protection, patrol, rescue and find suitable breeds. I'd suggest a malinois or rottie (I've owned rotties and everytime I see one I think of the ones I owned.)

But if you're looking for a dog, that will absolutely murder every dog it will come in contact with, as well as tear a human a new one, you need to google bully kutta. Many people in the west have no idea this dog exists, but it does and it's a big breed with a life span around 8-12 years. Anyway do a google on it. Another dog thats preety good from what I hear are Kangals, again do a google on the the breed.

Is this "neighbor" still in one peice? I have no patience with people who poison pets. This guy would probably have a several knuckle bumps on his head, at the very least. I'm sorry that you lost your dog, especially that way.
Back on topic. Yes, a pack of wild dogs can be dangerous, but those of us who have dogs, especially working dogs, suck as a rot, a dane, or a mastiff, will keep them with us, even if we have to do with a little less food. The properly trained dog can be a major assist in a survival situation.

That was an awesome video! For a minute, as I was watching the video, I said to myself,"Those aren't wild dogs, they look a hell of lot like wolves?" I didn't even look at the title on the tab-bar while watching. Then, at the end of the clip, it said hunting wolves with the golden eagle. Talk about efficient killing machines. Just so smooth and graceful. Nothing against the wolves, though, because they are a magnificent beast in their own right, when it comes to hunting. Just seeing that bird handle an apex predator like that, is just awe inspiring. It must take many years of training to get the bird to attack on command like that. Amazing!

I guess the wolves will stay away from their Yak herds, from now on? A valuable asset for the survivalist with the time and patience to train. A pack of wild dogs, would be in for more than they bargained for, if they were stupid enough to scavenge on an encampment of someone who has trained one of those killing machines. Very cool video, and thanks for sharing!

It was a long slow and very satisfying payback, but I'd rather have my dog. I wont go into details but there are many ways to turn someones life into a living hell and I used most of them..... No physical violence or any other physical damage but I promise you he will never even think about going near some one elses dog again.
