Child Denied Medical Insurance for Being Too Small..Wait, What??

First, a Colorado baby was turned down for health insurance for being too big. Now, another Colorado child has been turned down for health insurance for being too small.

Just a week after TODAY highlighted the story of 4-month-old Alex Lange, who at 17 pounds was considered obese, the show presented Wednesday the equally curious case of 2-year-old Aislin Bates, who at 22 pounds was turned down for health insurance for not meeting a proposed insurer’s height and weight standards.

Aislin’s dad, Robert Bates, told TODAY’s Erin Burnett he was shocked that United HealthCare turned down their request for coverage when their daughter is basically a picture of health, having suffered nothing more than a common cold in her life. Doctors have told Robert and his wife, Rachel, that Aislin’s small size is purely a matter of genes, not ill health.

I suppose this is just another simple underwriting issue, right? Someone employee in the UHC cartel forgot to add the "babies/toddlers are exempt" line, right? I am sure it will be cleared up after the press..uh..their intergrity forces them to change their decision.

These stories sure are coming out of the woodwork all of a sudden aren't they?

Funny how nobody cared about the other infants and toddlers likely denied HC in the past...now all of a sudden people care? NEVER made a story before did it? How ironic.

I wonder how many parents of these kids often get "hurt" at work. Somthing is showing up in their history I would guess.

You said it Mailman... these tear jerkers definitely have the smell of something rotten about them. Wonder what mommy or daddy is hiding or what they are trying to leverage out of all their little media stunts. Maybe we should call this the Hene effect, using your kids to get get attention.

I see three options with these stories of late.

One they are false and the parents/people are looking to get something for nothing. Plain and simple fraud that goes on everyday nothing really out of the ordinary.

Two the media is finding real stories and due to its (the media) overwhelming support for the more liberal side are pushing the agenda of healthcare to sway the public. This is a bit more complicated only because still people are asking where this money to pay for this health care is going to come from. There are a few people still asking real questions. I do though see where stories like this are swaying some of the public to the other side of choice though.

Three is that there are those working within the healthcare system we currently have to dismantle it from the inside. This is truly the most complicated because it would have taken a large amount of planning and forethought. Though I do think it is totally possible. Why not put undercover officials in spots and making decisions that will cause the public to really turn on the insurance providers out there now. After the majority has turned on them you create your own healthcare and after it is set up and installed fully functional impose your own ways to work things. That could be anything from euthanasia because of age or forced abortions to limit the number of children a person might have. Coverage could also be a minimum for those who would be unable to contribute to society.

While the third idea is certainly a different path than the other two I see it as a real possibility. Not saying I believe that is the case just that I could see it happening. I think the people have far underestimated what the government can and will do for too long.

Oh, please explain to me how these parents are 1) using their child to get attention 2) hiding something or 3) trying to get something for nothing.

Seems to me they are questioning why their child can't be covered even though she has been given a clean bill of health by the doctor.

I am more inclined to believe there are probably alot of stuff like this going on and has gone on for decades and people just found another insurance company or just let it go. Now that there is all the debate on healthcare, people are taking advantage of that using the media to shame the insurance companies into being more reasonable. After all, no company wants bad publicity and something like this sure doesn't do much for their image. If this is what it takes to maybe make the insurance companies be more fair, then so be it.

And, of course, I think the media, the politicians and some people are using incidents like this to convince people that the government needs to be in charge of health care.

I gave three different ideas for such a story as this. Read again my post in case you missed the numbers at the start of those paragraphs, they are spelled out but I should not need to use numbers when the words work just as well. I never said I follow any of them. I thought discussion, speculation and debate was a part of ATS. Perhaps I am wrong?


Regardless of if the parents of this story are using the child to get something it is a fact that sort of thing does happen, no?

I am all for everyone getting healthcare, I have never said different. But I have yet to see our government come up with a good plan on much of anything. Now we have people using the systems we have and living for free when they could be working. What will keep people from using healthcare they could get themselves and having others pay for it? Yes, we all will be paying for it (those of us who pay taxes any way). There is no way to get the whole thing up and going and continuing without taxes going up. The government will not cut their wasteful spending but only increase it. If you want to support someone who can support themselves go for it. I only feel I should help those who need help.
