PARIS - Somali pirates in two skiffs fired on a French navy vessel early Wednesday after apparently mistaking it for a commercial boat, the French military said.

The French ship gave chase and captured five suspected pirates.

I guess the French Navy should modernize its fleet, so there would be no mistake in the future like that: Hey, Abdul! See that schooner two o'clock?

Do the oil traders support the piracy off the Somali coast? Or maybe the OPEC came up with an alternative way to keep the prices high. Anyway . . . The US Navy should ask the Congress for more money to develop special vessels to meet the threat from the pirates.

That's a big mistake to make, try and take over a warship.

Pirates should be killed on the spot, their bodies thrown to the sharks. Once in Kenya, they will be released, or allowed to escape. If they go to France, the government will more than likely put them on the dole.

the way i see it, there are plenty people who have legal jobs that do way worse.

Hate to say it, don't really like advocating the death of anyone, but I'm with you on this one. There was a documentary on HC a couple of years ago about a band of pirates in the Straight Of Taiwan that hijacked a Chinese merchant vessel... they were eventually caught after killing everyone on the ship, including the captain, and the documentary even showed the Chinese brand o' justice to seafaring brigands - all of 'em were executed and it was shown on state run television. And you haven't heard about a single incident since (there may have been some, not being presumptuous, just haven't heard of any).

Point being, the only thing that seems to deter piracy as lucrative as it can be if you take hostages (especially civilian captains), is knowing that if you get caught, you will die. Pirates Of The Carrabean aside, it worked for the British Navy for the better part of 300 years. It should not be tolerated, end of discussion.

The fact is that piracy is on the rise all over the world. And commercial interests are in the way of security. The ships have a tight schedule and don't want to sail in a navy guarded convoy. They even refuse to sail a route out of reach of the small pirate vessels.

We don't need new navy vessels to counter piracy. In the cold war there was a focus on a 'blue water' fleet. We kind of made an agreement with the Soviets to fight out in the open water. But since the end of the cold war, every navy that could spend money on new ships, chose ships with 'brown water' capabilities. Because we all knew the future of naval warfare would be within sight of the coast.

The killing of pirates is useless as a deterrent. To those guys it is the choice between dying of hunger, of the actions of some warlord, or a foreign navy. At least the piracy option can be profitable and has a very high success rate.
Our only option is to somehow bring stability and security to the region. Not by sending troops, but by sponsoring the least evil warlord so he can take complete control of the area. As soon as he is firmly in the saddle we can make him accountable for getting the country back on track. The gentle humming of an armed UAV circling his position 24/7 will remind him of the fact that he will not be fired and sent home with a bonus if he screws up. There will be some firing involved, but the fireworks will be the only bonus.

Sure is alot of anti piracy talk in this thread, you guys should read this instead of just spewing whatever you hear. Denying ignorance doesn't involve a one-sided argument.

To sum it up, the pirates that you say should be 'thrown to the sharks' are just on edge because modernized countries (including France) have been dumping toxic waste in their sovereign waters for years. No wonder they want to shoot everything they see.

Here is a simple test to determine whether they are pirates or "coast guard". Do they take hostages for ransom? Yes they are pirates. No they are "coast guard".
