I think I got it. The only thing that corresponds to all the disappearing aliens is not just death, but murder. Perhaps when murdered by a human they disappear. Or, when a human needs to evade scrutiny about his story they disappear. Wait no, the dog also ate one up and he disappeared. Maybe murder in general.
