COLUMBIA, S.C. -- A 23-year-old soldier from Florida who was in basic training is the Army's first death from complications of H1N1 flu, officials said yesterday. The death at Fort Jackson, the Army's largest training camp and just outside Columbia, might be the first such loss among the nation's 1.4 million men and women in uniform.

H1N1 has been widespread in Iraq from reports I have read but this is the first confirmed US Army death. I find it unusual that it has taken so long for this to occur since H1N1 death rates are higher in the young and most healthy section of the population. Not everyone agrees with the cytokine storm in young and healthy people so time will tell.

Is there any way to combat this cytokine storm?? Anyone have any information to combat this cytokine storm if you get it?

A cytokine storm is basically your own immune system going into overdrive to fight off or protect a site of infection (most commonly in the lungs). It's helpful to try to prevent a cytokine storm in the first place by strengthening your immune system with Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Zinc, Selenium and fish oil (Omega3). Avoid neurotoxins like Aspartame/phenylalanine and MSG. Here's some places to start reading:

The problem is many people eat so much junk and are loading their bodies up with additives, high fructose corn syrup and artificial sweeteners and not enough healthy foods. A lot of people have compromised immune systems and don't even realize it. Maybe they seem healthy but if you're living on chemicals, you're NOT.

Read it correctly.

First death in the ENTIRE U.S. military.

No deaths on ships or deployed units have been reported.

This young man was in his fifth week of BOOT CAMP.

Still theoretically a civilian.

He had been sick since 1 Sept. one week after he went to boot camp.

Army recruit dies of Swine flu.

Sure, it's a trace mineral that has been the topic of some interesting articles. This article states that selenium deficiency can cause flu viruses to mutate.

www.scienceagogo.com...
The article states:

In April, the scientists reported discovering that inadequate intake of selenium boosts damage caused by influenza viruses.

"We believe our latest findings are both important and potentially disturbing because they suggest nutritional deficiencies can promote epidemics in a way not appreciated before," Beck said. "Here we looked at flu virus because it hospitalizes more than 100,000 people each year in the United States alone. But what we found conceivably could be true for any RNA virus -- cold virus, AIDS virus and Ebola virus."

She and Nelson worked with colleagues at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Nestle Research Center in Switzerland. They fed groups of mice either selenium-deficient or normal diets. Later, they exposed both groups to a mild strain of human influenza virus known as Influenza A Bangkok. Rodents consuming too little selenium developed significantly more harmful lung inflammation, which also lasted considerably longer, than animals that developed the flu but whose diets were normal. The difference between the mice's illnesses was the difference between mild pneumonia and severe pneumonia, which can be life-threatening, they said.

This article is from 2001 from studies done at the University of NC, not specific to the H1N1 but the basis is sound. If you're taking a selenium supplement it's best to take around 70 -100 micrograms daily but most people get enough selenium in their diet through these foods such as seafood, whole grains, nuts, eggs, etc.

What is your point here? First, a young man in his 5th week of boot camp is theoretically, and very much not so, a civilian. And I don't quite get what you're saying... that maybe there are more swine flu deaths in the military, and they haven't been reported because they're deployed or at sea?
