Hi, Binder- Thanks so much for letting us all know that the hospitals are just as busy on full moons! I didn't know that. My ex-boyfriend was a California Highway Patrolman, & as crazy as it is in California generally, on full moons- people's driving, amongst other things are NUTS! The state has these huge, man-eating freeways that devour people in more ways than one- the state is so large, & now that it's nearly bankrupt, there are never enough people like him to go around. If someone gets killed by a drunken or reckless driver ( that's how my poor father died, years ago), & its on some long, lonely stretch of highway in the middle of nowhere, what's left of that person might not be found for a very long time.

The T-shirt idea is wonderful. Go into business for yourself- a screenprinter can handle the lettering, etc. for you. Get an artist to handle the picture of the Magnum gun, too.

I agree 100% about "attitude"! There are assertiveness & self esteem classes for folks that need it. Rapists, thieves, murderers & muggers know two very important things- they can size up just how vulnerable someone is, & they know if a person has money or something valuable that they want. People with money tend to keep at least one hand right on it almost all of the time- a wallet in a pocket or cash in a computer bag, etc. It's best not to carry a purse. My Dad taught me to keep important things in a hidden pocket in a jacket & to walk assertively as if no one could mess with me. He was a martial arts teacher, & I'm so glad that he did.

Don't work too hard on this full moon! I hope there isn't too much of a caseload at your hospital.

Hello, ArMaP- you are right; the sex offender site is neither infallible nor complete. It is an official place to get fair warning about potentially dangerous people in one's neighborhood, but- bottom line- it is a list of KNOWN sex offenders who have been convicted of such crimes.

The legal definitions of who is a sex offender vary from state to state in the US- they can run the gamut from a "weenie wagger" (police slang for the type of person that exposes their genitals in public) to a rapist. In my neighborhood, the three women who were sex offenders were as follows: one had raped a fellow inmate at the Women's Institute in Marysville, & the other two had molested children. What you said illuminates my warning about schools being "dirt Magnets" even further- you are absolutely right that unknown, unconvicted sex offenders commit crimes in areas that registered sex offenders are in. I think that this could have been a major factor in that the serial rapist who attacked male students was never caught. His DNA was not in the system, either.

I'm very disappointed that outside the US, such information is not available- I sure wish it was! My studies in the sexual motives of socio & psychopaths are terrifying. Few of us know what monsters in human form may be walking in our midst. Every one of us needs all of the help we can get.

The problem with the USA's sex offender register is that if two young kids have sex, say they are both 16 then the male usually goes on the register and the female doesn't. Even though they are both consenting people! This utterly destroys the young guys life.

I think the entire system needs an overhaul, not just in the USA but worldwide. If any two young people have sex and their ages are within 3 years of each other then i think no charges should be brought. For younger people, say 12 years old we should reduce the threshold to 1 years difference, maybe 18 months. By doing this we give leeway to kids who mature faster and give in too their instincts whilst making sure that we don't allow predatory paedophiles to get away with anything.

I, too, agree that changes are needed. I don't think that tons of teenage flirtation cases should be clogging up the courts in the first place, especially when both parties are under 18! As long as it was consensual, of course. There needs to be an overhaul of the system, yes. In California, depending upon the circumstances, a judge can even force the people to get married- especially if there is a child involved. How's that for another way to have one's life ruined- married too young? Half of all marriages in this country end in divorce as it is.

Silo SnF to you!!!!!!!

Fantastic post and excellent thread thank you to all who have contributed. I have email both of my daughters who has always given me their dad a hard time regarding this difficult subject. My duty as a father to talk to them about what one doesn't want to. It is a shame that there are topics like this but human nature what it is there is a necessity for it. Also a shame that women must feel that they are the targets that they are. When my English wife was in California I taught her about our hand guns and shotgun. Now that we live in England we have a wonderful Rotie cross Retriver who has a teeth grip beyond belief and a retired police Shepard that is only 3 years old. They retired Kai to get rid of a rotten police dog handler. Force loss our fantastic gain. I have taught my daughters the cleverness of keys and old fashion bic pens. Now I have this tread and many tricks for them to read and learn about. Thanks again.

I'll tell you though, that kind of thing bugs me. With all the creative ways killers have at their disposal to lure people to their death, WHY WOULD ANYONE GIVE THEM A NEW IDEA?

That's the problem!

I read this info and my first thought was *Holy BLEEP*! Now some freak is going to go out and use this as a method of entrance to a home - regardless if it's rape, abduction, theft, etc.

Thus the thread was born...

By the way, I added the puppy and kitten thing, as, if I heard a baby, I might think first before opening the door (as horrible as that sounds it's true), but, with a puppy or kitten I would forget myself and open the door right off.

Thanks tons!

gracie

It is very hard to make convincing recordings of babies and kittens, or anything for that matter. It is also hard to play them back convincingly with a portable setup. Although I suppose it only needs to be convincing at a distance.

Seems like it wouldn't hurt to test this to find out how practical or impractical a method this is. My suspicion is that it is too impractical.

But this is not to take attention from the most frequent cause of rape: Rape by people known by the victim, who are not likely to require elaborate tricks to get their victim isolated.

Not only are those cases of rape more frequent, they are also the least frequently reported. Well, I admit this is anecdotal, but it makes sense that victims would have more fear of reporting a person they know in a position of power or a person that is part of immediate family, than a nameless face.

To be completely honest I could never understand how a women could let a man rape them!

And the fact someone gave you a star makes me sick...

I totally agree. But this is the ignorance we are dealing with in society. Like we "let" it happen or encourage it.

I see it everyday, people walking around with their hands in their pockets.
Staying alert and not doing stupid stuff like this will make you a less attractive target.

My hands are in my pockets because my cellphone is in one and my keys are in the other. Most likely holding my longest key protruding between my index and middle fingers. And yes, I am walking alert & aware of what is going on in all directions around me.

I would like to comment on the self defense issues.

First... looking like a victim, not looking or feeling confident etc. This is most definately a myth. You will see boxers, martial artists, professional soldiers etc. getting raped as well. Rapists don't care if you look vulnerable or confident or not. If you are in the right place and the rapist is psyched up, then you are a possible victim. It is an invention to explain the individual selection process, when no other explanation was found.

Second. Most rape victims only become aware of something being wrong when they are being physically wrestled to the ground. Their arms are locked and their legs are blocked. The victim is not able to freely move or retrieve guns, pepper spray cans, keys, knives etc. in their pockets.

So... pepper spray and guns are of little use. If the rapists head is close to yours, you don't want to use pepper spray, and that is if you can even get hold of it . A gun is a medium range weapon, and is easily countered and blocked at close range. I recently read a US study, which said that people who carry guns are 4.5 times more likely to get shot and 4.2 times more likely to get killed than people who don't carry guns.

So we end up with self defense, and that is most likely the best approach. However, in a rape situation, you will probably end up in very close physical combat, so you need to train a style with emphasis on grappling.
