Collins and Howard agree that with a lockup the sheriff would not be required to provide showers and personal hygiene items, or visitation and exercise, to defendants awaiting arraignment.

“What kind of sad, sick joke is this?” said Karima Amin, founder of the group Prisoners Are People Too, which has been rallying outside the Holding Center to protest the conditions inside.

This is absolutely disgusting... Erie county in western new york with buffalo being the biggest city has been sued numerous times over inhuman treatment of inmates that are awaiting trail and have yet to even be arraigned or sentenced. No personal hygiene items and limited bedding. Terrible conditions with general cleanliness. The county has been sued numerous times for inhuman treatment of detainees and now this new facility will be even worse than the holding center itself. way to treat people that are supposed to be innocent until proven guilty....

Officials put in a place of authority need to be recycled at their first mistake. If you aren't ready to serve and uphold the law as it is written, then you need to be taken down and replaced with another immediately. It's so easy. Laws are written. You read them. You serve and uphold them as they are. Nothing else to it. This lockup violates constitutional rights. All those supporting it need to be removed by any means necessary.

Of course we would need the people of that community to take action.. lol!!!!

Exactly, Erie county is historically very very corrupt. Now we are entering new grounds of unconstitutional territory. Its sad when your government is going against our constitution at local, state and federal levels... This disgusts me...

I once tried stopping a fight in a bar, later I was arrested for assault.
All that is needed to get arrested is a phone call accusing you of something, they lock you up before they even begin checking the truth of the allegations.

It's way too easy to get arrested.

So I was in lock up for 3 days, I had no soap, no water, no shower just horrible expired muffins and a cookie and disgusing ham sandwhiches which I couldn't eat because I am vegetarian.

For 3 days all I ate was old muffins and cookies and a little milk too.
It was 3 days because I got arrested on a friday and had to wait until monday to go to court.

I had lost so much weight and I was smelling like pig.
There was a toilet and a sink in the cell but no soap.
I kept asking for hand soap but they just kept telling me "this isn't the ritz hotel" in response.

I wouldnt' wish that on my worst enemy

Yea, I unfortunately did three months in the Erie county jail, while I was guilty of a minor misdemeanor i went 14 days in the holding center on 23 and 1 lockdown not being allowed to read any books, ate mainly bread and water and was only given 1 hotel style bar of soap every three days which after i showered had to give the soap back to the guard which he would just throw away. Wasn't allowed to do any laundry that entire 2 weeks and only had one pair of pants and one # and one pair of boxers... I smelled horrible. They gave me a toothbrush but no toothpaste. I had a matt to sleep on but no linen, I had a pillow case but no pillow. They even refused to give me toliet paper on numerous occasions... it was disgusting..

oh ya that reminds me
I also had to sleep on a really hard bench with no pillow
I told one of the guards "forget the bench save some money and give me some cardboard and i'll sleep on the floor, it'll be much more comfortable i'm sure".

on the other side of the coin I really experienced culture shock in those 3 days.

Yeah definite culture shock. I was watching the news one night cause I was lucky enough to have the tv directly in front of my cell and they were discussing a recent cold blooded murder where the killer did the deed to take the victims shoes, cell phone and gold chain. When the showed the perps picture he was in the cell next to me... are you in the states of Canada, I can't remember"?
