Polanski arrested ahead of extradition

He had come to a plea deal with the prosecutor's office, but the judge made it known he would not honor the plea. That is why Polanski fled the country. He admitted guilt and struck a deal to plead guilty to lesser charges.......everyone was fine with it except the judge.

The victim wants the charges dropped, and in all honesty, if he had not reached the plea deal with the prosecutor's office and pled guilty, the statute of limitations would have run out on this decades ago.

The state of California is broke as hell, and they don't have the money to spend on a high profile case that even the victim doesn't want to go forward.

I'm sure this guy is the way he is because of what happened to him in the Holocaust and to his wife, but still it's no excuse. He should have to face the consequences.

While I hardly support Polanski's decision to have sex with a minor, that was a very stupid thing to do indeed and should be punished, I would like to take up the people here making him out to be a serial pedophile or something.

I would like to ask you how your Psyche would react if your house was invaded, several of your close friends murdered, and your wife slaughtered with your unborn child being ripped out of her womb and murdered as well? All by a clan of psychotic satanists?

I won't accept that you would be all fine and dandy after something like that, and no, this does not exonerate Polanski for his actions in this case. He should have been punished for his actions a very long time ago.

I would merely like to point out that both parties put it behind them a very long time ago, one has apologized numerous times, the other has forgiven him for his actions (In fact, shock and awe, they settled a civil case with Reparations some years ago!). And ultimately, Polanski didn't do it out of Pedophilia. Can you imagine the psychological damage that the above situation would inflict on a person? Can you guarantee that you would not do something completely illogical as a result?

It does not exonerate him from his crime, but it does draw the line between being a pedophile and a person to be pitied. I'll close with this quote from the victim herself:

In 2008, Geimer stated in an interview that she wishes Polanski would be forgiven, "I think he's sorry, I think he knows it was wrong. I don't think he's a danger to society. I don't think he needs to be locked up forever and no one has ever come out ever - besides me - and accused him of anything. It was 30 years ago now. It's an unpleasant memory ... (but) I can live with it."

I wonder if there is a clause in the settlement that would require her to pay back the money in the event that this went to trial? That might explain her reluctance.

If he pled guilty and fled before sentencing, there doesn't need to be a trial. I just hope that he doesn't get some Liberal judge who just gives him a Paris Hilton type sentence.

I think Polanski is a good person who did a bad thing. I think he deserves forgiveness, but he shouldn't get off easy just because he's famous.

I certainly dont condone what he did, and i am sure he is guilty in some way. But 30 years? Not only did he rape her but the state of CA and the justice system also raped her imo. Why would they bring this out into the spotlight, it only makes them look bad? They are raping her all over agian.
Simply barr Polanski from reentering the country again. And cut off all his royalties.
