Largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon treasure found in UK

news.yahoo.com

The seventh-century hoard found by 55-year-old Terry Herbert in western England, consists of at least 650 items of gold and 530 silver objects weighing more than 2.2 pounds (1 kilo), along with some copper alloy, garnets and glass.

Most of the objects are ornaments for weapons and other military artifacts, some inlaid with precious stones.

Bland said he could not give a precise figure for the worth of the hoard, but he said the treasure hunter could be in line for a "seven-figure sum."

Now that is a tidy sum of money. Talk about stumbling across a fortune.

Hard to imagine what string of events led to this large of treasure being buried out in some farmers field. It will be very interesting so see what the archeological expedition manages to uncover, and what details about those who deposited this treasure can be revealed. Something must have happened, either this is loot that was hidden, or perhaps wealth hidden to prevent invaders from stealing it. This seems like it would be the most likely explanation, unless some sort of structure is found to have existed there. I wonder if they will uncover any bodies from the site. Could it be cursed?
