The roots of the Abu Ghraib prison scandal lie not in the criminal inclinations of a few Army reservists but in a decision, approved last year by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, to expand a highly secret operation, which had been focussed on the hunt for Al Qaeda, to the interrogation of prisoners in Iraq. Rumsfeld�s decision embittered the American intelligence community, damaged the effectiveness of �lite combat units, and hurt America�s prospects in the war on terror.

"Assertions apparently being made in the latest New Yorker article on Abu Ghraib and the abuse of Iraqi detainees are outlandish, conspiratorial, and filled with error and anonymous conjecture.

"The abuse evidenced in the videos and photos, and any similar abuse that may come to light in any of the ongoing half dozen investigations into this matter, has no basis in any sanctioned program, training manual, instruction, or order in the Department of Defense.

"No responsible official of the Department of Defense approved any program that could conceivably have been intended to result in such abuses as witnessed in the recent photos and videos.

"To correct one of the many errors in fact, Undersecretary Cambone has no responsibility, nor has he had any responsibility in the past, for detainee or interrogation programs in Afghanistan, Iraq, or anywhere else in the world.

"This story seems to reflect the fevered insights of those with little, if any, connection to the activities in the Department of Defense."

The link was working fine, unfortunately, some people don't scroll past the catchphrase and click the link. To quote a passage, which, on it's own, may disrail the entire message, does an injustice to people who cannot place things in context. Some could argue that people who only pick and choose quotes to their advantage, and not read an an entire
statement, deserve their ignorance. Unfortunately, they are the most vocal. I was simply trying to stymy people who wanted to comment on this thread, while being quick to anger, may not of taken the time to read the entire message.

Rummy was quite aware and he gave the orders to do do so.

Do you think the enemy is playing fairly by a rule book?

Didnt after 9-11, the nation realize that a lack of intell because we stopped using "bad guys" or questionable techniques hurt us?

Relaxing our much stricter guidlines for interrogations may not be a pleasent choice....but what else will you do to gather serious intell from a prisoner?

Deflection as a tactic in defending the corrupt Bush administration is following the law of diminishing returns.

It was not the lack of strongarm tactics that failed to prevent the 9/11 plot. It was a specific and deliberate fragmentation of the intelligence services that ensured investigators would be called off the scent in their examination of flight schools, enabling the plot to be executed with unparalleled success. Congratulations Cheney and Bush on Pearl Harbor II.

bin laden should have been captured a long time ago if the USA had put on more harder-to-the-point interogation techniques !
this is war you know...so don't go soft on the enemy
but use all means to get intelligence capture info needed to slain the so called warlords,leaders and people in charge in the enemy camp.

softies do not belong on the battlefields and this includes prisons and interogationrooms.
prisoners are expendable after they have given the info targeted.
